My dr. switched me to HTS and Colistin instead of TOBI because the TOBI irritaated my lungs too much. that being said, any tips for my new drugs?

I don't know what your lungs are like now but depending on the percentage of the HTS, it will more than likely make you cough a lot until you get used to it. I hated that stuff.

As for the colistin, I think that it kind of has a weird taste like TOBI does but it's not as bad. I also had some trouble with the colistin foaming out and coming out of the neb. Sometimes the foam would get up into the mouth piece and that was horrible. I only ever did colistin in the hospital, so the foaming may have had something to do with the way they mixed it.

Good luck on your new meds.

I would suggest doing HTS first in your treatment session. It is going to make you cough and it tastes bad but you'll get used to it. The colistin I think tastes better than TOBI, but it does bubble up a lot in your neb. I use a PARI LC STAR neb. Try to mix it and let it sit at least 10 minutes before actually doing it. Hope that helps!

I used to have problems with Colistin foaming but now I use it with the Pari LC Plus nebulizer and the foaming is minimal. Another thing that helps is removing the needle from the syringe before squirting it into the neb cup. It foams up much more when you push it through the needle. Also when I am not pressed for time I will mix it with a little extra sterile water (2.5cc instead of just 2cc.) This seems to cut down on the foaming as well and only adds about a minute or two onto the treatment time.

As for the HTS most people use it while doing the vest if you have one. In my opinion it makes vest sessions more productive and cuts down on treatment time. It will make you cough, but that is what it is intended to do...just means its working. When I first started using it, it would irritate the back of the my throat...but that went away with time.

Hope you find them helpful!
