steroid side effect or something else

After finishing 3 weeks on IVs, Alyssa is still coughing. I've posted about this already, but the sage continues.... So the doc felt that her PFTs were better and her lungs sounded clear, so the IVs must have done their job on the bacteria, but perhaps she has some inflamation or asthsma so he put her on prednisone. She has had 2 doses so far. Today she was a total bear. Ok, I get that steroids can have major mood issues, I've been on a burst myself before its not fun.

But in addition to being an extremely moody and difficult child today, she looks odd. Her face is very very pale, with a streak of bright white across her cheeks and nose. And under her eyes are very bright red circles, her eyes look sunken in. Is this a side effect of the pred, or perhaps a delayed side effect of the IVs, or is something else going on that I'm not picking up on? Has anyone every noticed this happening??

Oh Man Roid rage has stuck at your house!! So sorry! Could it be that she is just so tired and worn out? Her little body has been through way more than it should have to handle. One time marty was on Solumedrol (IV steroid) before he was diagnosed with CF and had pneumonia. He was sooooo pale that the doctors started running tests on him to see if he was anemic or something. It turned out he was just pale and he was so run down. The steroids also suppress the immune system leaving her vulnerable to more stuff. Hopefully she will start to handle them a little bit better soon! Oh I so wish these kids could catch a break. Hang in there Heather!

Pale + sunken eyes + circles make me think of dehydration off the top of my head...? Even if she doesn't seem obviously dried out I might consider running some clear fluids overnight and see if she looks better in the morning. I have no idea if it's a steroid side effect (2 doses doesn't seem enough for it to be affecting her immune system yet but I know it does at some point... which is the last thing our kids need) but it really seems she is looking unwell.

I'm so sorry the steroid monster is paying your home a visit. Emily was suchhhhh a monster her last week on them w/ her last exacerbation, I was ready to scream!

Harriett, I was thinking dehydration too. We haven't been using the tube because she gains so well when we knock the staph numbers down. I will get some extra fluids in her today and see if that is any better. I really detest the steroids!!!

Ugh....When Aidan was on steroids, he was completely out of his mind and almost pulled his PICC line right out. He looked terrible as well. He was a danger so we told the doctor we had to stop them. We haven't used then since even though the ENT likes to use them before his surgeries, I always talk him out of it. Good luck...Is the cough better?

Megan -- thanks for asking. No, we just gave her the third dose of 5 on the steroids and she still has a minor little cough. I'm beginning to wonder if her baseline has just changed. Though her PFTs are very good, I just don't like the thought of her only getting worse from here.
