Stomach distention

I have portal hypertension which is why my stomach is so distended all the time, but I've gotten asked if I'm pregnant so much that I've completely lost my love for shopping for new clothes and I'm wearing all black everyday to work. I don't like this new attitude I have.

Does anyone else have this problem too?

I don't have the stomach distention like you but I do understand how you feel about shopping. My weight fluctuates so much that my clothes are always too big or too tight and I hate trying clothes on because even if it fits when I buy it I know in a couple of weeks it won't. It's gotten to the point where I'm gonna have to look for jeans in the little kids department so I don't even try anymore. So to some degree I know how you feel.

Ugh I know it's so frustrating! I feel like I have a wardrobe for when I'm distended and then when I'm not. It really stinks.

I had this problem about 5 or 6 years ago. It's like I would get such a gas buildup or something that I wouldn't be able to fit into the same pair of pants that I put on that morning! I never really figured out what the problem was. About a year or two later I was up to 160 lbs. (I'm 5'1) so I went on Atkins diet, and I lost all the weight plus all of the bloating that seemed to be going on. I switched to diet sodas, unsweet tea, and started drinking way more water and now I rarely have any trouble with looking pregnant unless I eat something I know will blow me up! But like I said, I never really figured out why.

Sometimes if I start taking Protonix (like prilosec) it will help a little bit, but it never goes away. My enlarged spleen and liver don't make things any better. It makes me lose a little confidence sometimes.

i know how you feel. i have the same problem. i am thin everywhere else, but have a pooched tummy. it has gotten worse the older i have gotten, but i have always had this problem. the only time it ever looks half way flat is first thing in the morning when i have gone hours without eating. but as soon as i eat, even a small meal my stomach is out again. i carry a sweatshirt with me almost everytime i go out to eat with my husband because i always think.. i come in thin, and leave pregnant looking...i can only imagine what one might be thinking . haha! my doc said it could be because of the slow digestion and poor digestion causing the bloat. i know if i could just lay off my sugar intake it would help...but i am a sugar lover and as soon as i try to stop eating sugar, i have a bloodsugar drop and have to eat something sugary to get my blood sugar back up and it ruined my efforts..haha

Hi Kristen,

Have you talked to your md about this? Do you see a liver specialist?

My son is 14 and he has liver disease and portal hypertension as well. Last January his stomach was very distended all of a sudden. His liver specialist told him he had to limit his sodium intake to 2000 per day and limit his fluids to 1 1/2 liters per day. That doesn't seem like he'd be taking in a lot of fluid but I double checked my notes and that is why he said. He also prescribed a mild diuretic spironolactone . He started at 50 mg per day and eventually it was tapered to 25 and then he stopped it as the water retention wasn't a problem anymore for whatever reason. He also takes prevacid 30 mg 2x per day.

I would keep a diary of your diet and medication you take and see if you notice more distention on certain days, with certain foods, etc. Also you should definitely talk to your doctor about it especially if it bothers you and makes you lose confidence. Your doctor may have some ideas about how to help you with this.

Wish you the best.
