I'm sorry your little one is not feeling well. Your baby has been on antibiotics? This can really mess with digestion in itself. I too would make sure the rash on your baby's bottom is not yeast. Lotrimin cream should usually take care of it if it is yeast(I often had to use this on my daughter when she was a baby and had antibiotics). Also, something that is really great for CF'ers to take is Culturelle. It is a probiotic(which replaces the good bacteria that antibiotics kill). I started my daughter on it when she was 3 years old or so with the doctor's approval. Not sure about little babies, I would check with your CF doctor before starting it. My last suggestion is to check your baby's stool for C.dificile if the pooping doesn't let up. I would also let your baby's bottom "air out" as much as possible. My daughter would have a sore bottom and to let a wet diaper on just makes it worse. Laying the baby with the bottom exposed and on cloth diapers opened(in case he goes) to let the air get to his little bottom.

Hi Andrea,I am sorry to hear about the diagnosis. My daughter Cass was diagnosed at 3wks old too. At that age I remember many calls to the dietitian about her stools and how much she was eating. Alot of the time she was ready to go up on her enzymes. She was also on zantac from the projectile vomit that got really bad at times. We would go through 2 burp rags a feeding! Now she takes prevacid for the acid which also help the enzymes work better.

I hope your little one feels better soon!

First off I am incredibly sorry about your son's diagnosis. I have two children with CF and still cant believe sometimes... anyway...

About the tummy. Kiana (8 months) had serious issues. She would, like your son, arch her back and scream bloody murder for about 30-60 mins before she finally pooped. All I could do was hold her and try not to cry myself. We tried everything.. switching her enzyme count, giving her lactose free formual.. nothing.

What finally worked was actualyl switching her formual (on fluke). I was standing at the store trying to buy some of her old stuff and they were sold out (OMG!) so I was looking for another kind and kept thinkig that "this is going to make her tummy hurt if I switch cold turkey" but then again she already has a sore tummy so it's not really changing anything. Long story short - we bought ENFAMIL GENTLEASE for GAS AND FUSSINESS and seriously, sh ehasnt had any trouble. She went from crying in pain 3-4 times a day down to maybe 1 a week.

I would give that kind a try if you are really stumped. Good luck and remember to breath...

My daughter went through this stage as well and it took a while to get it cleared up. As for the projectile vomiting, it may or may not be CF related. My son had pyloric stenosis which caused his projectile vomiting. It is very common in the first born, especially when the child is male.
