Sweat Test

My 4 year old is having her sweat test tomorrow. Does anyone know how the reading work (numbers?)
She has been having many respiratory problems and sinus infections for the past 2 1/2 years. We had her tonsills and adenoids out in April 06 but that did not work. She was hospitalilzed December 05 ( we never received a definitive dx) we were told Atypical Pnemonia, Pnemonia, Pertussing (whooping cough), bronchitis etc.

We were in the ER over this past weekend with an O2 sat of 94 but after the Duo Neb treatment it went up to 98. Right now she is on Prednisone, Zithromax, (Md called today and said that he may have to change to Bactrum if she is not better by tomorrow) PulmaCort(nebulizer) Albuterold (nebulizer) Zyrtec, Singulair.
When the MD called he also gave me the results of her labs from 1 1/2 weeks ago
In her specimined from the gunk in her eyes, she had H. Infuneza, Strep and Staph, In her nose she had H. Influenza and in her throat she has Strep and H. Influenza. In addition the "coughs" as she calls them, she started this most recent bout on Wednesday and was on Augmentin at the time.

Any advice or suggestions that anybody could provide would be very helpful

We too are having a sweat test tomorrow for our 3 year old dd. I will be praying for our children. My daughter Hadley's story sounds familiar to yours. Along with her multiple bouts of respiratory issues we have recently, over the past 12 months, developed digestive issues that the docs can't seem to pin point a cause to. We've ruled out celiacs and Crohn's and other IBD issues but no clear cut answers. Our genetics tests have been sent off and we're still waiting on those. I'm praying for a low clear cut negative number tomorrow, however, I've learned from some pretty amazing families on this site that CF is anything but clear cut. (Thus the genetic testing) I know that there are multiple posts on this site with the specific ranges but in general between 30 and 60 seems to be shady. I've talked to some families that had "negative" sweat tests but genetics revealed otherwise and I've heard from those who had results come back in the 60's and even 70's but further tests revealed a much lower number. (Ususally lab error from inexperience) Are you having your test done at an accredited CF hospital? You can find this out from the CF website. As i said, I'll be praying for your family tomorrow as well and I hope that we both receive some answers. I'm planning on hanging around the lab to wait for our results. PLease feel free to send a private message if you want or need to talk tomorrow. I'd love to hear how things go for you.
Blessings,
Allie

Just wanted to say that I'm praying for both of you that your kids are CF-free. We're here if it turns out otherwise. We've all been through what you are going through now. Please let us know what the sweat tests say. My son's were very high (he has CF). My daughter's was 38 (a high negative) and that just didn't sit well with me so I had her genetically tested. She is only a carrier.

Feel free to ask any questions and PM me if you want!

GOOD LUCK!

Please read my blog for a full story about sweat tests (link is below in my signature line).

The short answer is:

up to 40 is normal
41-60 is borderline
61 and up is positive

Since we have experienced "normal" and "borderline" numbers personally and soooooo many people on here and experience the same thing I would strongly encourage you to continue on with full genetic testing if her sweat test is anywhere above 30.

My daughter's sweat test is 38 & my son's is 41

i would push for a genetic test (ambry full panel).

there are way more false negatives with a sweat test than a genetic test.

Let me see if I can remember the numbers correctly. Under 40 is negative. 40 to 60 is that gray area everyone talks about. Over 60 is postive. (Emily was a 103.) Genetic testing is always going to be your best MOST ACCURATE ANSWER.
Let us know how things go!
