Swimming in rivers, lakes and oceans?

Our hemophiliac son goes swimming all the time, and we access and then deaccess his port twice a week at minimum. If you couldn't go swimming for 3 days after deaccessing a port, most hemophiliacs would never be able to swim, as Hemophilia A patients have to infuse every other day (Ds has Hemophilia B and infuses Tuesdays and Fridays).

I wouldn't let any of my kids swim in a very filthy river or lake. For instance, wouldn't let any of them near the Ohio River for all the tea in China (its the most poluted river in the world). But, otherwise, I think you need to use common sense and I definitely think its a good idea to let kids go swimming as much as they want. Its great exercise and as someone else mentioned, salt water from the ocean is GREAT for CFers.

Oceans I am fine with. The salt water and air is actually free therapy so I say go for it. Pools that are not well chlorinated are off limits but if I can smell the chlorine then I am ok with it. Hot tubs are a definite no! Feet only!

Lakes, hmmm, touchy! I grew up on a Florida lake my whole childhood, waterskiing, tubing, kneeboarding and anything else you can think of. That was some of the dirtiest nastiest water I have ever been in (not to mention the snakes, frogs, and aligators that swam in it also). My bathing suit would be black with muck by the end of each summer. But it was OUR lake and we spent years and years swimming in it. I don't know if I could let Jae swim in a lake (like that) in good conscience but I try not to be paranoid about the little things.

Its great that you care bout your kids. But playing in the ocean is great for their health. The excerise 1, but also the salt water is great for their lungs. If your worried about the water, try choosing clearer areas. But you usually don't get sick of going in water.

I am 27 and grew up playing in streams, rivers, and lakes!! I had never been to the ocean until my honeymoon in 2002. It never harmed me at all!!

Now post-Tx I was told to stay out of rivers, streams, and lakes. I can still go in the ocean but if I do, I have to have water shoes on my feet to prevent from stepping on something and getting a cut and it getting infected. I have mainly been told to stay out of water that does not have any fesh water running into it (mostly lakes).
