Swimming in rivers, lakes and oceans?

We deal with this issue too. Our daughter loves swimming and we've always let her swim in the ocean, and private pools. Our pulmonologist has suggested that we stay away from public pools, which is fine while she is a toddler. When she is invited to parties later, we'll figure that one out. My problem is that we live in Los Angeles, and Santa Monica and Catalina Island waters have been rated as the top most polluted in the country for bacteria. So yes, the ocean salt water is great, but I'm terrified of the pollutants. I wish I could help. But we're in the same boat (no pun intended). Everyone seems kind of divided like the red sea on these issues. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Good that you didn't have to make that decision. I will never swim in a lake or a pond...gross and bacteria! The bacteria is my major concern. I know that pseudomonas and ghiarrdia (sp????) live quite well in those environments. Yuck. I love swimming in the ocean and in pools (though making sure they are properly chlorinated can be a concern!)
