Hi, I haven't posted in a while, but I would like your input on an issue I'm dealing with.

This weekend my bf and I went away to a village outside of Madrid with some friends. Before we went we celebrated my birthday and I ate too much cake, and had an upset stomach on the way there. Also I had a bit of something in my throath, nothing mayor. But after walking around the village on Saturday morning, I got a bit exhausted and starting feeling a bit poorly. Upset stomach, chills and tired body. It continued the time we were there, resulting in my bf saying that it's best if I don't return to the village for weekends any more; since this is the third time that I've been there, and every time there is some kind of health issue. Last time was in June/July last year, and it was very warm and I had difficulties in breathing. My friends and my bf were enjoying the trip, out taking long walks etc. while I stayed behind in the car waiting, by choice. Now back home, we have talked about that I can't go on trips etc, because everytime there is something. We can't go to Paris or London, or Egypt as we have talked about. Because my bf doesn't want me to get ill.

But can this really be true? This is going to be my life? Just having to have to stay home? I am only diagnosed about 2 years ago, and have "mild cf". Are there others like me? What do you do when you start to feel poorly on a journey? Or do you just stay at home? In your rutine?

Pleas give me your input. I work but I want to have some sort of life as well...

Hey there,

I've definately found that my feeling sick has become more frequent and it definately has stopped me from doing things on the weekends, especially after a stressful work week.

As far as an upset stomach, does your doctor have you on the correct dose of enzymes? Making sure you're on the right dose could definately help with stopping the stomach upset. Do you have any kind of acid reflux? Taking a medication like Nexium could help too.

Maybe if you're feeling a little bit coming on you could talk to your doctor about an oral antibiotic to keep the upset stomach/chills/fatigue away. I would definately check with your doctor to see that he has you on all the correct doses and right meds. He/she may be able to prescribe you something to help out so you can continue to take those little trips that you definately need! Weekend trips are a great stress reliever!

Hey Gunelle,

sorry you're getting worn out on your weekend trips!

The key to CF is pacing yourself. One thing I have been working on since my mid 20s is not overdoing it . This applies to anyone, but I think we CFers need to really practice not "burning the candle at both ends", something I am more than often guilty of!

When you wear yourself out, your CF flares up. The secret is to identify what is happening and then consciously make changes, adjustments, so you can still go party on the weekend and go places! This takes PRACTICE so don't expect to get it perfect for awhile!

For example, if I go on a trip feeling a little bit sick I know that if I go on a trip that may include little sleep, a lot of partying, exhaustive travel situations and bad food, my slight illness will turn into a full blown sickness. I'll never forget the time I had a cold and was on the tail end of it, but still coughing a little bit. Well my little cough turned into a lung infection on the trip and we were across the country (i live in the US). It was a terrible trip, but it was a learning experience for me. Now, if I know I am going to be going on a trip, I do the folowing:

1. I get plenty of sleep before the trip. I try not to go out or do anything too crazy the week before I'm leaving.

2. I make sure I'm not already sick before the trip. If necessary, I'll take a day off work just so that I can nip anything in the bud that needs to be dealt with.

3. On the trip, I bring plenty of meds in case I do get sick. Cold medication, my CF meds, etc.

4. I usually am fine on trips, because they are usually relaxing. But I make sure to make sure my stress level is low. When I get stressed out my immune system takes a hit.

Is there anything on these trips that is causing you to get worn out? Are you getting enough sleep? eating right? Staying away from smoke? THink about how the lifestyle on the weekend differs from your normal lifestyle. What is it your body isn't getting? Also, it sounds like maybe your boyfriend is overreacting a little bit. You may have CF, but you have to live and enjoy life! It should NOT keep you from enjoying yourself out of town.

my husband and i have gone on some amazing trips. i have a huge passion for travel so i'm sure my adrenaline plays into how i feel while i'm away, because i always feel great.
but-i do alot of preparation ahead of time to ensure we have a good time. hotels that are within close walking distances to attractions we want to see, staying away from secondhand smoke (even if it means we have to get up mid meal and go to another restaurant!), NOT going away with people that will stress me or irritate me... and while away i never miss a therapy.
I have a saying that "Cfers are really never on vacation".
Meaning-we can go away from work, take a break from kids, crazy relatives, etc..but never from chest pt. that way, i rarely get sick and i enjoy my time there.
i also make a point to stay very hydrated while i'm away-which is important bc while on vacation you generally walk alot more than normal.
some things we do that help (which not everyone can do, but putting out there for general info that's helped me)-if we have enough skymiles, we fly first class overseas. that way we really get sleep and get there feeling rested-i do believe the sleep/"real rest" helps me alot, particularly with my immune system while i'm away.
we try to get pampered a bit while away-a nice room with a comfortable bed. get alot of sleep-it is vacation after all.

i think the biggest thing is really relaxing-does a weekend away feel like another chore to you, or a real chance to relax? if i'm excited to go somewhere, or excited to get away with my husband and really relax-i generally feel great.

do'nt forget that circumstances change. about 3 years passed where we didn't travel all that much, bc i was sick alot and had a new baby. but life is a wave and its sure to be easier at some times and harder at others.
if you're having setbacks now don't think that this is how it will be forever. you're still learning how to handle your illness.
example-one year i was the sickest i've ever been in my life-scary. i thought that was it-i'd never get to do exciting things anymore. the next year, my husband and I climbed mt. sinai in egypt.
so you never know!

In my opinion, I don't think you were "CF" sick. Sounds like a combination of problems. First, you ate too much cake. Second, it seems like you had a virus. And the last time you went out, maybe you did have a CF problem but that may have just been coincidence or a bad time of year for you to be there.

I LOVE traveling. I have gotten sick while traveling before, not fun. But in no way do I think that staying home was the answer. Honestly I wouldn't let CF keep you home. I understand your bf doesn't want you to get sick but I don't think traveling is the problem.

keep a positive attitude and pace yourself (don't overdo it).

First let me say something. Never let CF predict what you do in life. I understand that we have to do things differently than "healthy" people do, but to allow it to limit what you do in life and stay home because of it, is not living.
I agree with Christian that when you are away to do what it takes to have a good time. I do the same as Christian as far as hotel rooms. We no longer stay in smokey or even smokey smelling hotels. We do what it takes to afford a better place to stay. If we dont I get stressed and sick and it defeats the purpose of going away even if its just for the weekend.
Sometimes I get sick on vacation but thats what comes along with having cf. But if I stayed home out of fear of the what if, I would always be home and for me thats not an option. I dont think succuming to cf is healthy.
That being said we are sick and thats a fact. We have to take care of ourselves at all costs.
If you are going away with people that stress you out or frustrate you its hard to relax and for me its not worth it. So I dont do it anymore.
So I am not sure what caused you to become ill but sometimes its just pure stress. Maybe just worrying that you will spoil the weekend by becoming sick gets you stressed out and actually does make you ill. Do some soul searching and try to figure out what causes you to be sick on vacation. If you fifure it out make some changes to help you have a good time.
I hope I am making sense. The moral of my story is not to let cf keep you from enjoying life. Do what it takes to have a good time within reason <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. Good luck
