Great reminder about the cancer saveferris.

I learned about the fact that you can't get a transplant if you've had cancer in the last 5 years from Karen. Do you guys remember her? Karen had a little girl, Kayla, and a husband Troy. He had cf and couldn't be transplanted because he had cancer. Even if he got rid of the cancer they knew the likelihood of it staying gone for 5 years was unlikely. It was very sad to see/read him dieing of cf complicated by agressive cancer.

For this reason I will not tan other than very carefully on vacation.

If you decide to do it Jenny, maybe you could think of it like a vacation. Like only go 3 times in a matter of 10 days. Don't over do it and be done with it after 7-10 days. Another idea is getting a sun lamp that simulates the positive effects of sunlight without the tanning aspect. I think that's what they do anyway.

I realize there is a risk of cancer from tanning but I would assume if you were only going a couple times it wouldn't be any more harmful than a weeklong vacation at the beach. The warning on the actual tanning bed warns "OVERexposure can cause skin cancer" meaning not to fry for 16 minutes every day...

I tanned before my prom for 3 weeks. I only went in for about 5 minutes and did it gradually a couple times a week. My doctor also has told me that for some reason there is a lower rate for skin cancer in people with CF, but he also warned that's not to say we're immune to it and thats also not to say to NOT take precautions, because there is still that chance when OVERexposed.

I personally think tanning is relaxing and it makes you feel good about yourself. You have to decide where to draw the line between enjoying your life and avoiding your life just to be preventative, where to draw the line between quality of life and quantity of life. It's your choice, but if you wanna do it to feel good and relax, then go for it, I'm sure if you only did it in SMALL amounts you will be fine.

A little bit of sunlight is good for you. In some countries, like Pakistan, where women never leave the house without being all covered up, you see high rates of vitamin D deficiency, which is another health risk. "All things in moderation...even moderation."
