TB TESTING

The article I read a few years ago talked about how a hospital that didn't have private rooms was able to put a CFer in with someone who had TB because of the gene issue. Basically the gist of the article was that certain people with genetic disease were immune to some infections because of the genetic mutations. But I haven't seen any articles since then.

It wasn't a requirement, but Samantha has had a few TB tests. When she went to the Early Headstart Program in GA, since she had a weakened immune system she had to have a TB test before she could attend the program, and her drs in GA just continued to do the test.
She hasn't had one since we moved to FL

I have been to several CF centers as we move around a lot. None have ever mentioned getting TB test. I do know you can either have the "stick" test OR a chest x-ray to find TB, so maybe they just look for it on my chest x-ray now and then?

Also, I did request it once when I was not feeling particularly better after IV meds.... I was also having night sweats, etc. and wanted to know why. So, they did the skin test and it was fine. Negative.... About 5 months later I got a job with the school district and needed to get another one. It showed a bit of a reaction (not TB). More than the previous test. But, when I questioned this, they said it was cause I'd just had a TB test and you can actually do damage and cause your system to be "sensitive" somehow to TB (not sure if it ups risk of the disease?) if you get tested often. They told me from now on, if I need to be tested for TB for ANY reason to require a chest x-ray instead of the stick test since this could cause "problems" and false positives, etc. This is what my CF doc said. Mel, I think its interesting they test you for TB yearly and have not told you this... Maybe my CF doc was wrong or just speculating? I hadn't ever heard that testing too often could "give" you TB OR that it could indicate false positives. Especially since you've gotten it yearly with no problems.

Interesting.....

Now it makes me wonder if SOME of my problems has been all the years of testing. I am going to inquire with my clinic itself, but still am interested in hearing what others say about the protocol of it at theirs. It has always been part of annual workup, but now they do it at flu shot time.
