TB TESTING

I believe it used to be standard practice but is not anymore. Not sure why, maybe because too many of us would show positive due to TB related bacteria in our systems.

I have never been tested for TB at my CF clinic...but my sister-in-law gets tested often because of her job. I thought it was very interesting that perhaps getting tested too often could show a false positive, because after she was tested at work, she didn't believe the "negative" (i have no idea why), so she went to a Patient First and asked for the test, and it showed she had latent TB, so now she has to take a medication once daily for six months, with a blood test every two weeks because of this med's effect on the liver. And it all could just be because she had two tests back to back!

The last time (and only time I remember) I was tested for TB was before I went to college - and I was only tested because it was a requirement of the college.

I've never been tested as a requirement for my clinic. I was tested for tx evaluation and also when I started working in a hospital. I've been told that you shouldn't be tested 2x in the same year due to false positives. Yearly tests I guess are OK since they require the testing for all hospital employees.

I know at Cleveland they did 3 tests on my arm at the same time... one was TB, one was yeast, and the last was tetanus. The yeast and tetanus were for positive controls. They figured if you didn't react to them then you may have something wrong with your immune response in general. Interesting thought on the being tested too often though...
