Tell me about PICCs

I agree with Scarlett81 about the 'abx wipe out factor'

I'm not a nap person, but when I'm on IVs, I take a couple hours nap every day. It really zaps my energy level, making me feel like I'm worse. When I'm done with the round, my energy comes back and then I feel much better.

I'm sure since you've never done home IVs, you will either be admitted briefly to learn how to use your PICC or they will send a home health nurse to your house to help you. I no longer use home health, but instead just go into clinic once a week for dressing/line changes, labs etc. Home health pharmacies delivery your drugs and all supplies right to the house.

I've had about 20 PICCs, all placed in radiology under ultrasound and lidocaine. I'm one of the few that can feel the lines being threaded all the way in, not painful but very freaky feeling. If you're uncomfortable during insertion, just ask for more lido, they are usually happy to comply.

Good luck, try not to stress about it.

Seriously?? So am I!!! lol...The PICC nurses told me after they put this current one in (two weeks ago) that I "was feeling things that normally ppl shouldnt feel." And yes that is mostly just a wierd pressure type feeling, no pain...just odd.

Shannon, I have my 4th PICC in right now - for decreasing lung function and because I get hives from Cipro and Levaquin. When Pseudomonas was first discovered in me our family doctor put me on IV for two weeks and the nurse touted the advantage of home IV care as not interrupting your schedule: hook up and go to work, teach, go hiking, visit my sister ..... Mine is often a busy schedule so I have carried that idea with me - PICC in, go about normal life. Now, of course, I am in the CF loop and realize that many people go into the hospital for tune ups - many get used to that as kids. But I am realizing that I need to appreciate the benefit of home IV and the responsibility I have to slow down, do more treatments and take full advantage of this treatment. That is my lesson right now - very hard for me to feel well and reduce the myriad of other responsibilities I have.
