Dustin,

Don't sell your short on being a redneck, I am a West Virginian after all!

In her condition Terri has no cognitive ability, she can't "choose" to give up, she can't choose to do anything.

the sad irony of it all is that a eating disorder caused her to be in the condition that allowed america to debate whether or not she should be fed. Maybe the lesson to be learned is not just the importance of having a living will but how very severe eating disorders can be?

I heard that because of the whole thing there's been an increace in interest about living wills and such. Maybe there was a purpose after all. =-) It's kind of amazing when you think about it, I wonder if terri, or her husband or her parents for that matter, even realized how many people were affected. And then the future may be different for all those people who made wills and such.... and then, actually, it'll probably end there as if it never even existed at all, but it's still kinda mind-blowing when you think about it.

My mom was telling me that her hubby controlled everything. Didn't even let family be in there when she passed on. Now he is having her cremated, they want her burried.

I am having mixed emotions about this whole thing.

Either way, RIP Terri.

Jarod, I think that you make a very good point. I have a living will and a MEDICAL power of attorney and I am very healthy right now. No one can predict what will come tomorrow though, so I want to make sure I am covered.

Luke, I am a little lost, she had an eating disorder? I didn't catch that anymore, would you mind sharing/elaborating a little more.

Julie,
Terri had struggled with weight and it is believed her collapse/heart attack was caused by potassium imbalance caused by years of bulimia and bulimic tendencies.

Julie,

the reason she was in that condition was she had a severe MI due to electolye imbalance, her potassium was critical. She had the MI, and went more than 10 minutues without O2. The doctors attributed her condition to anorexia/bolemia. The husband said he didn't know about "it" but by looking at all her pictures there was defintely an issue.

for those who aren't medical....If your electolyes go to high or low your heart will begin to beat irregulary. This irregularity can result in heart attacks and cardiac arrest.

You know, I never did look into why she ended up in the condition that she was in. I appreciate the explanation.

Yeah, it's hard to know what's going on without actually knowing the people involved. Like, why wouldn't the husband let the family in? Is it 'cause he hates them, or because they were causing problems? And why did the husband want the tube removed in the first place? Was it for Terri, or did he have more personal reasons. Of course we'll probably never know, but sometimes I can't help wondering...

This is just my view, to answer the question Jarod just kind of posted. I have a feeling that her family really did know her wishes all along, but were just trying to be hopeful and optimistic and they wanted her to come around. Howerver hopeful and optimistic though, I still think it was cruel and sick. So, with that stance in mind, I WOULD NOT on my life let his family be a part of any of the care after her death. He is, afterall still her husband and in my opinion he still really cares about her. Therefore I feel that he would only do what is best for her. Just my thoughts though.
