Tharapy distractions!

When I do tharapy I always pace, either outside or near a sink (for obvious reasons). But I am VERY irresponsible, VERY easily distracted, and pretty horrible at putting things off.

So how do you all do your tharapy (Flutter Valve, Acapella, etc.) from start to finish. If I REALLY buckle down and do it non-stop I can get my flutter done in 20 minutes. But I usually end up getting ditracted to where I can go an hour or more, sometimes my brother works on the computer while doing tharapy and he just ends up doing tharapy spiratically all day.

I've learned a lot of useful things, such as I CAN NOT talk to anybody while I'm doing tharapy. If the TV is on, forget it (I end up stopping tharapy without realizing it so that I can hear what they are saying on TV).
I've tried doing stair steppers or some kind of work out while doing tharapy, and setting reps with tharapy etc., but Tharapy is tiring enough, and doing both sometimes makes my lungs hurt.

I'm in the process of getting a vest, so that should help me focus on Flutter if I do both with the Vest timer. We'll see.

I honestly think most of it comes down to the fact that I'm a huge procratinator, and I just HATE doing tharapy, so I psychologically put it off and put it off and I just dread it.

If anybody else has this problem please let me know, and what seems to help you with it.

i used to struggle with this a lot, too. unfortunately, the only that has helped me with the procrastination has been life experience. witnessing and hearing about other cf'ers with horrible lung infections, and going through a few exacerbations of my own, therapy has taken on an importance that trumped any procrastinative tendencies i have (and i have strong ones!!).

i have learned to cut out distractions by avoiding things that require a shift in focus. having the vetst should help out a lot, as it doesn;t require so much attention. many people do lots of different things while on the vest. most things require some practice, as the vest can make reading, typing, writing, etc a bit of a challenge. i haven't mastered reading or writing (while on the vest ), but reading on the computer screen is doable, and so is typing. watching tv on the vest is a snap, and video games are pretty easy, too.

i'm willing to bet that just getting the vest will help you a lot. it may not be as portable as the flutter, but much less focus intensive.

I typically read while I'm doing my inhaled stuff. I like reading because unlike the tv when I have to stop and cough or stop to switch meds or whatever reason...I can pick the book back up and be right where I left off...I didn't miss some crucial scene. And I dont have to worry about volume. When I'm done I do my acappela right away and I usually do it in the bathroom so I can just spit away. Theres less distraction in there too but since I started Hyp Saline I have noticed the Acapella is most affective from the time my inahlation runs out to about 20 minutes after. Then it feels like everything is drying back up. SO that has motivated me to get right on it and not d1ck around.

I understand your procrsatination issue. It's really hard to do when you feel good. Like kswitch until I started to see the problems others w/ cf have and how "easy" it is to help prevent it, I started to do it more often. I especially hate my Tobi months because of the time issue but it has to be done. I love to read and now that I have the vest I read while I do everything. I do most of my stuff at night before bed. So if I have a late night somewhere then I could be up late or want to "skip" it. I just do the best I can.

Hopefully the vest will help you keep on track and make it easier to comply.
Best of luck to you.

Well I've had the vest before. Mine broke forever and a day ago and I'm just now (like within the past two days) being approved and such for a new one.

I've been doing the flutter twice a day, EVERY day since I was about 13, you would think I would have it down by now, I guess not.
Debbie I know exactly what you mean about the saline, in the past couple of days I've been pretty good about tharapy, if I go off by myself somewhere, where there are no distractions, do tharapy and FORCE my mind not to wander around to other thoughts (Yes, that's my main issue, I'm the kind of person who thinks a lot, and I can litterally stop tharapy, and just think for an hour, then realize that I never did finish tharapy). Basically it just comes down to me focusing on tharapy, and nothing else until it's all done. Nebs are easy, I just sit there and write or read or myspace, no problemo. Anyway, I'm hoping my new vest will help me focus, because if I KNOW I only have a certain time until I must be done, I usually do pretty well.

This is why I'm so glad we have a Chest PT lady. My older son is so distractable! (he gets his ADD from his mom). He used to do the vest and play video games, but the shaking caused him to be careless with the controller.

So it was either video game or vest. HMMMM, such a decision.

I used to be pretty bad about remembering my treatments, too. There was always something else I either would rather be, or should be, doing. But when I started to get more frequent infections, I buckled down. Plus I had my mom, sister, father, and boyfriend all nagging me. I'm glad they do, though ^_^ Now that I'm living on my own, Rick (bf) does my CPT before he leaves for work, so if I don't remember, he does! As far as using a device for therapy, I use the acapella after my nebs in the evening. I don't have much of a problem concentrating on it. Usually I pull up an article or something on the internet and do it while I'm reading.
