The 4 Day Work Week

I'm not sure about everyone else, but where I live and work, there has been a lot of talk about going to a 4-day work week - meaning four 4-hour days - to save money on gas, utilities for buildings, etc. I know most "normal" people love the idea, and I understand why - the idea of 3-day weeks sounds fabulous!

However, as a CFer, I think, if my work makes the switch, I may lose my mind during those 4 days trying to fit in treatments, exercise, trips to the pharmacy, visits to the doctor, my commute, household chores, getting enough sleep, etc. Nevermind actually seeing my husband. Heck, I already having a hard time keeping my sanity working 8 hour days <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

What do you all think about this? (both CFers and parents of CFers)? Do you think this would be a big deal? Would you like it? Does anyone already do it?

We already do it (have for close to 15 yrs). Our employees actually voted it in. We stay open all 5 days so employees either work M-Th or T-F. It works well. They fit doctors appts, etc. into their day off. If that doesn't work for their doctor, they trade their day off for the week. If they want to take a long weekend, they trade their day off one week and have a 2 day weekend one wk and 4 the next. We do have a few people who elected to stay on 5 day schedules.

I would assume you adjust your schedule to do housework, pharmacy, doctor, etc on your day off. That way, you could still spend some time each evening w/your DH. And, you'd spend less total time commuting. The part I'd assume would be hardest would be fitting in treatment time and not wearing yourself out or skimping on sleep.

Depends upon how it's done... I know some people who work over their lunch hour and then add half an hour in the morning and half in the afternoon -- work 7:30 to 5:30... Where I work, one of our departments has summer hours -- they come in at 7, take a half hour lunch break and then leave at 5:30...

I've got one friend who just got a job working 3 -- 12s at a window mfg plant -- he works 6 to 6 and gets paid full time w/benefits. Think that might be a bit too brutal, but I know some people like it.

I remember here in the Uk back in the mid 70s, we had a 'winter of discontent', and we were forced into a 3 day week. I was at school at the time, so plenty of time off for me so I enjoyed it.
We have tried to get our work to adopt 12 hour shifts, allowing us to work 4 days rather than 5.....but they are not going for it.
