The Danish Way

many of you have heard me speak about the Denmark way - doing IV antibiotics for PA regardless of how you are feeling. Danish patients live well into their 50s, which is fairly different than other European countries.

Anyway, here's an interesting study examining an aspect of the Denmark way...

Forgive me if this sounds stupid. But I read the abstract three times and I just can't figure it out. This abstract is saying the the Denmark Way is good isn't it?

It's written by the Danes, so I think they will commend themselves. Notice in the brief abstract, they use words that are all assumptions. They never say anything definitive. Maybe it's due to this reason or that...

There has never been a controlled study comparing the Danish System to any other. Denmark for many reasons is a very unique country. It is teeny tiny. Very few CF patients. Same backgrounds. Food high in Omega 3s. Very clean environment. Sparse furniture. Excellent socialized medicine. I knew a Danish doctor-- they make very little money so you really have to want to practice medicine. And by putting their patients in the hospital every 3 months at least they know the people are compliant, getting mucus clearance, etc.

Maybe it is the greatest system ever. Here's the magic question: Would you want to be on IV medicine every three months? And the IV's are probably for one month. And unless they now let them do it at home, those people were hospitalized every 3 months! Most people on this site say they are counting the minutes until their month on IV's is over!

I would think bacteria would quickly become resistant to the iv meds. Interesting, though! Denmark has always been on my "places to see" list. I'll call it a research trip and let you know what I find out! (I'm sure my husband will go for that!)
