The Danish Way

A few points:

1. I know several who are on IV's every 3 months. Typically for 2 weeks at a time and they still work, etc

2. Other countries have sparse furniture, few CF patients, and diets high in Omega 3's. Those aren't the magic bullets by any means.

3. The bottomline is that the Danes with CF as a whole are living for quite a long time... and it looks like their health isn't being ruined by frequent antibiotic use as some claim antibiotics will do. CFer's as a whole die more frequently from loss of lung function than resistance to abx, so Tonya your point is well taken. There is a trade off...

Since you promote the Danish system, are you on IV's every 3 months?

Other countries that did try the Danish sytem like England have quit in part because cross infection was a problem. People in hospitals get other bugs.

There have been no controlled studies of the Danish System. This study like this one is by them (and we have only seen the abstract which is not impressive in their conclusions). They do have resistance issues. How many people have liver problems? Have many lose their hearing? Does everyone have to comply with this system?

I think the Danes would say their country is VERY different from the other countries. Knowing one Dane who is a Doctor there, they are very proud of their tiny country because it is soooo different. They also share a gene pool. They may have milder mutations. Like I said when you have a few hundred people that have CF with a good environment and a great medical system -- compliance can be followed.

Do you want to be on IV meds every 3 months for 2 to 4 weeks and be in the hospital -- like the Danes have done? If they are having home care -- this is very different and this would be recent. And the studies would have to be repeated over time.

Most people cannot stand IV's for one minute.

One of the reasons people die from CF is because the bugs get stronger and stronger from antibiotic use and the bacteria cause more and more damage to the lungs until the lungs fail. The antibiotics AS WE ALL know and have experienced lose efficacy. There has not been a new class of antibiotics for 20 years -- although they may be coming out with the things now.

No one can deny that our society is in serious trouble with the rise of Superbugs. Vancomyacin used to be used with special permission from the government. Because antibiotics are losing their effacacy, Vancomyacin is used as a common CF drug now. We need stronger and stronger drugs as Pseudomonas mutates.

It is also a fact that in those 20 years, very little research has gone into antibiotics, because there is more profit in other drugs like viagra, sleep medicines, stomach medicines, cholestoral medicines...

I don't promote the Danish system! I think it's interesting what they do... and as you've seen my pattern, I post research, studies and other info.... I don't necessarily agree with it. I never said "we must do this, this is the only way." or "I advocate this."

I just find it very the Danish way very interesting....

You and I both know we can go back and forth day and night here....and say the same thing over and over. So I'll put a stop to my end here.
