The Hungry Pill

My daugther's CF Clinic wants to put her on a pill that makes her hungry all of the time. She's 4 years old and her weight is at the 25th percentile. Obviously, they're worried about her weight because they don't want it to effect her lung function and we're doing everything that we can to get it up. Has anybody else ever heard of this or been put on it. I can't remember what the exact name of the pill is so that may not be very helpful..

I'm so frusterated. My daughter sees 2 doctors at the CF clinic that she goes to and i swear they are on 2 totally different pages!! One puts her on medicine, the other doesn't agree so takes her off. I'm really coming to my wits end with this. I don't know how much more i can handle!

Also, has anyone ever been put on Flovent (inhaler) for CF (not relating to athsma? my daughter doesn't have athsma and one doctor had her on the inhaler twice a day, the other took her off. ughhh i don't know...

Here is a link talking about appetite stimulants that might be informational to you. If you do other searches on the site you will find more:

As to the flovent.....has she actually been tested for asmtha? IMHO CFers have an "unofficial" asmtha component to their CF since Asmtha is inflammation. Many CFers use some form of inhaler or neb to open the airways immediately (albteurol for example) & then something else that lasts longer (usually with a steroid in it like pulmicort or advair).

Can't really help you with the hungry pill but my granddaughter is on flovent, abuterol and dornase. She takes the flovent for the asthma component on CF. Did they give you a reason for starting or stopping the flovent? I would push for answers to make sure everyone is on the same page. When we asked about asthma months and months ago one of the doctors said she didn't need it, however, around a month later all of a sudden, (like we never spoke about it) they decided that yes she does have an asthma component of CF and needed to be on flovent. It has helped her alot.

my daughter is almost 14 and a few years ago her cf doc put her on reglan (it helps the stomach empty quicker) b/c alot of times cf kids have a slower digestive system, wow it did wonders for her, she gained 7 lbs in like 2months. she still takes it. her doc said it wouldn't do any good to give her an apetite increaser if her belly was staying full. he's been taking care of cf kids since 1975 so i feel he's a pretty sharp guy.
