The Vest

Yes the vest can be very itchy and they have every reason to complain... The vest bothers me as well.....

I have to wear a thick tee shirt or it really itches.. Sometimes I adjust the belts to make it a bit more loose or tighter but I am not sure that is a great idea since you are supposed to have a certain amount of room inbetween the vest...

I recommend trying a thicker shirt.....It does itch though, but I remember when I first got my vest I found it to be more itchy at first until I got used to it..

Hello!

Yes, the vest also makes me very, very itchy and I get a red rash-looking thing wherever the vest was. I don't find it a very pleasent experience, and I feel bad that I don't do it anymore...

I even got a pad thing to put on my stomach, but that didn't help much.

I got a port a bit ago, and that's been another reason I haven't wanted to try it again, but the main reason was the itches.

I'm sorry that I can't be much help on suggestions!

I had a vest for a while (this was before my CF DX). I hated the itching so bad I had them take the darn thing away. It was on trial to see if it helped before they billed insurance for it. I really really hated the damn thing. So far the CF docs haven't brought up the dreaded vest subject and I really hope they don't. I get more crud up in a steamy shower + HTS and pulmozyme than I did with the vest (not other drugs) for the month I tried it. ~Juliet

Stacia,
I had the vest many years ago and I itched all the time and I even broke out in a rash. Here are the things that the docs made me try.....calamine lotion (put it on before she does the vest), Benedryl (take it about 1/2 hour before doing the vest), and extra layers of clothing. I tried every single one of these suggestions and they didn't work. The doctors thought that I was lying to them so they made me use it in the hospital one time instead of having the hands on CPT while I was there. The RT was in the room with me so they could see if it really happened. Like 30 seconds after I turned it on, the RT could see me getting the rash and I started itching really bad.

He told me to take if off immediately and I never used it again. We figure that it was some sort of allergic reaction to the material. I would talk to her docs about trying the suggestions that I mentioned and if those don't work, trying something besides the vest.
