Thoughts on if I should get Tested?

I've done a bit of research but haven't found anything specific as far as what I'm looking for.

I'm 24 years old, and I'd say when I was about 22, I started waking up and having to clear my throat some mornings. It progressively has gotten worse to where I have to hock up mucous a few times in the morning (I noticed it usually loosens up in the shower), and maybe once or twice during the day

I've been to the doctor and tried one antibiotic only over these few years (I usually like to let my body heal itself but I'm not opposed to medicine). Recently I went and my doctor thinks my nasal sinus's are just dripping constantly and didn't establish that she thought I was coughing anything up from my lungs, she said I may just have a bad allergy I've developed and I should try a neti-pot which I have, it helps a bit but doesn't seem to get rid of the problem.

I'm personally concerned that since I'm horizontal when I sleep, this is letting mucous possibly drain up from my lungs and getting into my throat which then I need to clear, and its not all from my nasal cavity (which is usually 50-75% stopped up except after neti-pot uses).

Unless I have some ravaging bad sinus infection that my body hasn't been able to rid, from what I've read I think it's possible I may have CF?

I was a former college athlete (soccer player) and used to run a whole lot and I never had any problems back then, I don't ever feel short on breath and feel relatively perfectly healthy otherwise today besides the mucous. Running today does make me have to hock up more so again the fear is I'm loosening stuff up from my lungs, its getting into the throat, and I'm having to clear.

Basically I am wondering if this sounds like I've developed CF, if these are symptoms, and if I should definitely get tested?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

In my opinion, based on what you describe it sounds unlikely you have CF. Even taking into account a less severe presentation of the disease, I think you'd have to have one or more of the following: copious amounts of thick mucus from sinuses and lungs, severe sinus infections, sinus polyps, lung infections with atypical bacteria, trouble maintaining a normal weight despite huge calorie consumption, intense gastro-intestinal problems.

I think you should have allergy testing done and pulmonary function testing to determine if you have asthma. I understand your concern about the post nasal drip possibly being from your lungs, but if your dr listened to your chest and said it was clear--it is likely clear. When you are sleeping that post nasal drip can go pretty far down.

Another thing you should investigate is reflux. The irritation from stomach acid can make your upper respiratory tract produce mucus for protection.

Finally, stick to that exercise. Find an adult soccer league in your area if you can. It will make a HUGE difference in your well being no matter what you end up having or not having.

Best wishes.

First, you can't "develope CF" it is a gentic disease and you have to be born with it.

I was dx at age 47. I played varsity basketball in college and was a life guard on an ocean beach in Massachusetts for five years.

I would be interested in the results of any sputum tests that you have had and what if anything is showing on xrays.
