Thoughts/Opinions on TPN

I was talking to my Home Nurse today that when I go back into the hospital Monday I want to talk to my doctor about TPN to get a jump start on my weight.

This time I am not sure I can do it on my own, but once I am there I feel I can maintain it.

She was telling me how it works at home thru them, but obviously doesnt know the procedures at my hospital.

I am not 100% sure my doctor will be happy with the idea, but I told my Nurse when she schedules my new PICC line (dont want to push my luck with the old one tho so far so good at 9 weeks) that I want a "double header". Dont know the actual name in case I can get TPN.

I am not at the point of needing a g tube etc, but I definitely think I need help. I am dangerously low.

Any feedback would be great!

Hi Melissa -- I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with your weight. I don't know much about TPN but I was under the impression that it needs to be just temporary because it can have negative side effects. Have you considered an NG-tube? Or do you already use one?

HUGS to you -- you share them so freely with everyone else, and you deserve some too.

Melissa,

I had TPN via PICC line for 3 months when I was 15-years-old. I needed it after I lost 3 feet of my colon and lost 15-20 pounds. I went from 102 lbs to low 80's at a height of 4'11".

I actually didn't mind the PICC for the TPN at all. For me, any tubes down the throat for supplementation make me throw up constantly to the point where I pull them out myself. And yes, I pulled about 2 of the suckers out so far. That all happened when I was 15-16.

You shouldn't have any problem. If I remember correctly, it takes up a lot of room in your refrig so start making room for it now. It MUST stay in the frig at all times prior to use or else the vitamins and minerals within are destroyed. It is light sensative also.

For me, I was on it 12 hours a day and taken off slowly to be sure that my body could pull its load without further assistance.

I think for you it will work just fine. As a matter of fact, if I ever need supplement feeding again, I won't hesitate to ask for it. It comes with a backpack that you can place on your back so you can carry on with whatever you want to do. Also, it comes with an automatic pump. You may have to adjust the speed/rate the first time with the nurse, but after that it is a piece of cake.

Anything I missed???

Oh...

As far as the diabetes part is concerned, I don't know if it will effect that or not. I wasn't diabetic at the time. Make sure to ask the nurse about it.

EDITTED TO ADD: You MUST have a "double header" for TPN feedings. I'm not sure what the reasoning is, but you MUST have a "double header". Any IV's and bloodwork are done from one hub, and the other is used soley for the TPN.
