Thoughts/Opinions on TPN

The home nurse said IF I was to do it at home they insulin gets mixed right into the whole thing so I dont have to worry about it.

I dont expect to need it at home. I am looking while in the hospital, but if it needs to be fine.

I am little leary to hear about the potential liver issues since my enzymes were already up from the Zosyn & slightly enlarged for a few years now.

Like I said I will inquire because I believe I really need help.

Thanks for your input, but keep it coming.....

BTW I dont see an NG tube as an option with my nauciousness, kvomiting & gag reflex as of late. It took all I had to get thru the exam with the ENT **sighs**

TPN can definitly mess up your liver. I've also had slight liver damage and have been on meds since i did 5 months of TPN. I'd had no liver problems until then, and it hasn't become worse. I did a week of TPN after a nissen fundo, but nothing more.

For me, I was having lung issues, which caused me to lose weight, and then i couldn't fight the infection. I wasn't stable enough for a G tube, and can't tolerate NGs. My clinic perfers to do tube feeds because of the liver issues.
I'm not diabetic, and i had some sugar issues when on TPN, so i imagine it would cause problems.

If I were you, i'd see if i could stand an NG before going to TPN. I knew almost immediatly that the NG would not work for me, and i'd assume it was the same for others.

I googled "TPN and Liver Damage" to see what complications there were--looks like it is only after long-term use. Don't think it is a big deal if you don't do it a long time. One or two weeks shouldn't result in a problem.

Hi Melissa,

TPN worked GREAT for me when I was severely underweight. We kept a close eye on my blood sugars and made sure that the infusions ran at the exact times so that it didn't cause any problems.

Funny thing, it made me crave graham crackers because it smelled like baby formula!

I've been on TPN twice. The first time was the doctor's idea, the second time it was mine. I really REALLY had to push for it the second time because of the blood sugars factor. The first time I was on it for about a month. The second time was just for a few days last December when I had an NG tube and was NPO after my code blue.

I hope you'll be able to get TPN. Sometimes high cal supplementation just doesn't cut it for us, and the short term complications of TPN are more desirable than the long term issues (loss of lung function, BMI, and stamina and difficulty fighting bugs) that could result from being in nutritional failure.
