Thoughts/Opinions on TPN

The little bit I know about it--it's not harmful as far as I know...Also it WILL affect your diabetes--it is really sweet so that is something you will have to talk over with doctor. I know that our patients are put on every 6 hr BS checks at 12/6/12/6.

Most likely you can have it all night and go off it during day, but lots of flushing of tube to keep open...

I am really proud of you for thinking of taking this step...since weight is soo important--you are sure taking care of yourself to be considering this! <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

DS was on it for a couple of weeks as a newborn after his bowel surgery due to ME -- at the time they were concerned with his liver levels and he was put on actigall (bile salts), which seemed to take care of the problem. That and he was weaned off of it once he could be on formula. Did wonder with adding weight, though.

So I'd ask about potential liver issues.

Hmm...

Good point about liver damage, Liza. I have been on Actigall 300 mg BID ever since I was on TPN or those 3 months which was 10 years ago. I do have permanent mild liver damage which hasn't progressed. However, I haven't been on TPN for 10 years so maybe that's why it hasn't progressed.

Interesting...

Hey there,

I am on G-tube feedings. I used to be on NG-tubes but, I needed feedings so much that I just got a Mic-key tube put in. I love my tube-feedings! I don't know what I would do with out them. When I am sick I lose so much weight about 5 pounds a day. The G-tube gives me something to work with when it comes to my weight. On days when I don't do well with any food I have my feedings I can do. I once was told to try TPN but I never did becuase my doctor wanted me to try Vivonex before I started with TPN.

TPN would work well for getting a little more on you. You also could have a G-tube put in just an case TPN does not work well. The good thing about tube-feeding is that you can get formula for CFRD as far as I know.
