To CF camp or not to CF camp that is the question???

I went to a regular camp AND a CF camp when I was younger. I hated the regular camp because they didn't understand me at all and ignored my parents' instructions. I wasn't allowed to eat snacks when I wanted and I lost 6 lbs. in a week. If the regular camp is one you know specifically, go for it. Just make sure they understand what it is before he goes.

I hated the CF camp too, but for a different reason. The one I went to was not "camp for CF kids" but "CF CAMP" if you get my meaning. We didn't do anything but CF stuff. Even though I was not doing chest therapy at the time, I was required to at camp. I told them my home schedule was different and they didn't care. My mom ended up bringing me home early. So again with this, I'd only send him to a pulmonary camp if it's one you know doesn't suck. Haha.

Really, the "making friends with other CF kids" is important, I think. But I don't think camp is the best way to go about it, really? I mean if he wants to go to that one, it won't kill him. But regular camp would be good for him too. And as far as making CF friends, there are ways to do that where he won't be around them for a week straight. You can go to CF events, let him play with the other kids there. I was a CFF poster child when I was growing up and I went to all the CFF events, hung out with all the other CF kids. It was only for a day at a time and it was wicked fun. Pen pals are good too, but as you know, it's not nearly the same.

My basic advice would be: Unless he really wants to go to the pulmonary camp (and it has a really good reputation), send him to regular camp. And then go to CF events and let him make his CF friends there.

This would be my concern...

Dalton was scheduled to attend a CF camp in Texas(?) about 7-8 years ago. He had to have 3 CLEAN cultures in order to attend. Literally, the day before he was to leave for camp, his 3rd culture came back positive for B.Cepacia. BUT, what if it hadn't 'shown' up on his culture until maybe the next time...what if he didn't give a good sample until next time...

I guess I just don't have a 100% faith in the cultures, espeically if the kids are young.

This is the problem! There is no guarantee. Thus the risk even with precautions! I think for those of us who have dealt with CF longer or cultured PA etc longer that we tend to be more lax (not everyone so dont jump down my throat). I do understand & agree with trying to minimize exposure in hopes of avoiding damage etc in the long run. As a kid I didnt have the "isolation" issue & I didnt go to any type of camps (CF or otherwiswe except girlscouts which I hated lol).

As an adult & dealing with issues that adult CFers deal with I have more of a "need" to be understood.
