Toddler Picky Eating

Liza, I'm trying to remember were you the one that doesn't like to drink a beverage after it's been served for 30+ min. I recall some mother telling us this story and how her son picked up the habit.

When I read about the dirty food it made me think of this other story because I was wondering where did he get this idea of "dirty food."

As for the beverage -- wasn't me.

The reference to dirty food probably comes from the fact that he's never been a sauce, dip or gravy person. Noodles have to be plain (I sneak butter on them) without sauce. No veggie dip... So they're probably serving him the usual fare at preschool -- casseroles, salad with dressing, potatoes & gravy... and he won't eat it because it has stuff on it. We went to an upscale brunch last fall and he refused to try the chocolate covered strawberries -- loves chocolate, loves berries, but not together.

And I don't think it's OCD regarding germs or being clean -- this is the child who ate a cheeto off the men's locker room floor at the pool a couple of months ago before his dad could stop him. At least we THINK it was a cheeto -- ewww!

Does your son have other sensory things that have to be just so? Certain textures, movements, tastes that he doesn't like? It could be a sensory issue (which are not necessarily problems, unless they are so rigid they get in the way of learning...) Sorry I work in early intervention and my mind is always at work when I read about toddlers!

This just makes me laugh so much. They are weird little creatures aren't they :) My oldest went through a thing where I had to leave her uneaten food on the table after dinner. I couldn't clean the plate until after bed time even though she never touched it again. It drove me batty because she was the first...when our son soes weird stuff, I just smile and let it go. Thank god we mature as mom's or we'd all by looney!

Yesterday the preschool director said he did better with his eating. I asked if I needed to bring in any cream, carnation instant breakfast... and she indicated she still had some pediasure from the last time he got finicky, and they always give him a spoonful of peanut butter if he's particularly picky. Had to laugh, day before yesterday he announced he didn't eat his cupcake 'cuz he wanted a GREEN one. Toddlers! Can't have the green one, so not gonna eat -- I'll show them.

Last night DS helped his dad cook hotdogs on the grill -- apparently they weren't dirty 'cuz he at a whole one, slice of bread and drank all his carnation instant breakfast, had a slice of swiss cheese and asked for more milk, had some carrot sticks & apple slices... Then a couple hours later, after walk and a stop at a store -- I treated everyone to Cold Stone Creamery and he insisted on having MINT ice cream --- it was green -- sigh. At it all, plus he drank a sports drink he found in my car on the way to the ice cream store -- it was also green.

So I guess, maybe it's no longer a dirty issue, but a "I'll only eat green food issue" -- except dinner wasn't green at all.
