Just to wonder, if you were curious about it, why couldn't you just ask your doctors? Even if it's just out of curiosity, I'd ask "Hey, Dr So & So, why haven't you ever asked me if I want a transplant?"

As far as I know, past drinking and drug use, don't affect your listing unless you're currently doing the same bad behavior. If you were addicted, then they see how long you've been sober or drug free. I've heard stories about transplant patients that were former addicts, or even screwed up their transplant by doing drugs, and got ANOTHER. If you decide you want a transplant, then be proactive.

i would not make an assumption that the docs have made a decision for you. Number one....they have no right to make a "secret" decision that you are not eligible for a transplant and then not let you in on that decision. If they had in fact done that......they would have probably had the professionalism to let you know why you may not be eligible. Number two......most CF centers are not part of an actual transplant team and really don't know enough about the particular criteria to know what makes a person more eligible. Now your current docs will certainly be looking at your current compliance and willingness to take care of yourself.....that is certainly a concern of theirs. Please at least ask them, if it is something that you would like to consider. You have a right to know what your options are.

My husband had done some drugs as a teenager but it didn't affect him getting his transplant. If you did want to get one I don't think past drug use would be an issue so long as you are clean now.
