Transplants...

I had a question.

Is it possible to travel on an airplane after a transplant. I know Anna is taking the plane back to TX so I assume you can (pretty obvious I know). But how far can you travel? Say Europe? And actually while I am on that is it possible to travel internationally after a transplant? Or is it too risky in case something happens like rejection?

I want to travel to Europe but I am afraid that I will need a tx before I get the chance to go. And I can't go anytime soon so i am just curious if I should consider maxing the credit cards and going now or if I should do what I was planning and go for my 30th birthday.

Thanks for any help!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sorry, but I don't know the answer to that since I'm only 12. I also have a question... my doctor says I have the worst lung disease he has ever seen. I talked to my mom and I about getting a transplant with my right lung, which is full of mucas and junk, half of it is also collapsed! Anyway, I was worried about how it would turn out, I know it is years away, but anyway, just.. just tell me anything you can.

Hi Amy

I believe that travelling would be ok, no matter the distance.
I couldn't fly till 6 months post. But that is because of the surgery on itself (not because it's a tx) and that it has to heal. I think because of the different pressure in the airplane.
My center holds on to 6 months but they say when you really need to, you can go early. It's what the surgeon says really, some say 3 months, other 6 or other even more..

As to travelling internationally. I think everything is possible. The last world transplant games were in Tailand for example...
I would read up on where you are going. I wouldn't go to every country, i would want to know about the healthcare there.. I have a sort of special medical pasport that i got from my team when i got out of the hospital. It has the date of my tx in it, a list of my meds and the name of my doctor, with details as phone numbers and addresses. And a few other things. Those are all in Dutch and English (like two stickers with my doctor's details, one in dutch and one in english).
