TTC

It's safe to say that my husband and I haven't been "careful" for about a year now, as far at trying to conceive. This time last year is when we decided to start thinking about a family. To be honest, we have only really "tried" on my fertile days for maybe 2-3 cycles. I don't want to get stressed, but I do worry that b/c of CF we will have a more difficult time TTC. I've started to chart my cycles for the last 3 months and am definitley learning a lot.

Guess I was just looking for some input or inspiration. I have an appt. in Feb to see a specialist for CF preconception counseling. My husband has already done the genetic testing and is not a carrier thankfully. I don't know what to expect from the appt. since my regular GYN has spoken to me as well as my CF docs on what to expect etc. I'm definitely a little nervous though. We're going to keep trying on the actual fertile days, and thinking positive!

Are there any certain herbs that helped anyone?
Do most CF women find that IUI is what worked?

Thanks to anyone for listening

Hi Jess

I've also just found this forum and its great - people are really helpful. I'm currently undergoing IUI (have had 3 unmedicated cycles and am about to begin medicated ones this month). My infertility is caused, like lots of women with CF, by having thick, sticky cervical mucus which is basically blocking my husband's sperm from getting into my uterus. That's why IUI can help - because it involves injecting the sperm straight into the uterus, bypassing the blocked cervix.

The chances of medicated IUI (IUI done in combination with hormone drug treatment) is about 20% I think, so it doesn't work for everyone. The next option if IUI can't achieve a pregnancy is to move onto IVF.

I'm not sure what your pre-conception counselling will involve, but its possibly to do with going through the whole issue of pregnancy as regards your CF with a specialist in fetal and maternal medicine? So things like explaining the potential risks, problems that might be more likely to occur because you have CF, asking if you've considered how you'll cope with looking after a small baby, how much support you have, etc?

When you get referred to a fertility specialist, they will do lots of checks on you (e.g. blood tests and a special type of dye X-ray called an HSG on you and blood tests and sperm analysis on your partner) to try to work out what is causing the problem with not getting pregnant.

In terms of herbs, you might want to do some research into one called Agnus Castus which is supposed to be great at balancing female hormones and some people say it can help with fertility. I take it myself - don't know if it works but its worth a try!

A lot of women with CF do get pregnant though without any need for assistance, sometimes it just takes time. Good luck!

Hi there. For me I think gaining body weight after I got married and using lots of lubricant has helped. My CF doc recommends taking Mucinex so I'll do that when I'm ready to start trying again. My suggestion for you is to start taking prenatal vitamins if you aren't already.

I've been pregnant more than once so now part of my routine when TTC is to get caught up on stuff - get a haircut, clean out the closets, stock up on household stuff and food, etc. so that I can do a little less during the first trimester.

Good luck!

Thank you! Yes I've been taking prenatal vitamins daily for over a year now. If you don't mind my asking as far a lubricant...did you use "Preseed?" Thanks for sharing your story
