Tube Feeding Formulas

Jim, I know exactly how you feel with regard to wanting to develop a good nutritional formula. My husband and I were on that very mission when we were trying to determine what to do for our son who is 19 and has CF. Our biggest concern was over the types of ingredients used in the existing nutritional formulas as well as the artificial colors and flavors. If it is being delivered via g-tube it is not considered nutritional supplements. Many insurances (and Medicaid) make a very clear distinction between anything you drink and enteral (g-tube) feeding. This is because if you CAN eat you don't need the formula; if you can't and use a g-tube you have no choice but to use formula.

We had to fight this orginially with our son, but as long as we get his g-tube supplies in the same shipment BCBSCA pays reluctantly. We are getting 6 x day (180 cans) of Peptamen Jr each month.

I would either 1) try to reason with BCBS, or if you are a bit wiser, call a home-health agency that does enteral supplies and ask for help in getting BCBS to see the error of their ways.

I recently started blenderizing homeade formula for my daughter. Her energy levels have gone up and her color improved. We switched from sole Pediasmart to about 1/4 Pediasmart to the rest real food. There are many ways you could go about making his tube feedings high calorie. PlumPerfect on here has a free information book that has some recipes she uses for her son. The blended diet is a lot cheaper than formula and way better in my opinion because you can get in them all of the good fruits and veggies they won't eat. Good luck to you.
