Tube Feeding Formulas

Jim, I know exactly how you feel with regard to wanting to develop a good nutritional formula. My husband and I were on that very mission when we were trying to determine what to do for our son who is 19 and has CF. Our biggest concern was over the types of ingredients used in the existing nutritional formulas as well as the artificial colors and flavors. I hope this doesn't come off sounding like a commercial, but as founders of the leading organic medical food company in the US, we were able to develop the first and only ORGANIC complete nutrition beverage. The product is called PediaSmart.

We launched PediaSmart in 2008 and it is now available through the CF Pharmacy (other medical suppliers, internet retailers, Whole Foods) and can be covered through Medicaid and some private insurance companies will even cover it. Because we understand the financial burden of having a child with CF, we have set up a Medical Hardship Program giving a 30% discount and free shipping to families who don't have Medicaid or insurance coverage.

PediaSmart comes in powder form is nutritionally comparable to leading brands such as PediaSure and Boost Kid Essentials. We do have customers who are using PediaSmart for tube feedings, but we strongly encourage parents to seek advice and supervision from their healthcare professionals. If you're interested, please feel free to contact our office. I'd be happy to talk with you or you may want to speak with our dietitian (Diane). Our contact information is available on our website: www.NaturesOne.com/PediaSmart/

BCBSLA lists in their policies that they do not pay for nutritional supplements.</end quote></div>

If it is being delivered via g-tube it is not considered nutritional supplements. Many insurances (and Medicaid) make a very clear distinction between anything you drink and enteral (g-tube) feeding. This is because if you CAN eat you don't need the formula; if you can't and use a g-tube you have no choice but to use formula.

We had to fight this orginially with our son, but as long as we get his g-tube supplies in the same shipment BCBSCA pays reluctantly. We are getting 6 x day (180 cans) of Peptamen Jr each month.

I would either 1) try to reason with BCBS, or if you are a bit wiser, call a home-health agency that does enteral supplies and ask for help in getting BCBS to see the error of their ways.

Hope you can get this straightened out.

I work for a homecare company and we supply feeds to BCBS members all the time.
Have you resolved this issue yet? Does your child eat anything by mouth or just the feeds?

I recently started blenderizing homeade formula for my daughter. Her energy levels have gone up and her color improved. We switched from sole Pediasmart to about 1/4 Pediasmart to the rest real food. There are many ways you could go about making his tube feedings high calorie. PlumPerfect on here has a free information book that has some recipes she uses for her son. The blended diet is a lot cheaper than formula and way better in my opinion because you can get in them all of the good fruits and veggies they won't eat. Good luck to you.
