unforgiving professors

I actually went to the disabilities office and they didn't want to register me. I actually had my CF doctor write notes for me that I give to my professors on the other hand. I haven't had one issue with professors, mainly because I'm a pre-vet major and they all know what CF is!

Unfortunately work sucks a bit more. Because I am perky most of the time I don't think the other techs think I am really sick. They get out of work because they are hung over, but when I actually get sick they think I'm a complainer. Luckily my boss is on my side. I don't know if she has informed everyone about my CF but I would love to have a staff meeting at this point lol. I went to work all day with a 'backache' a couple of months ago and ended up in the ER because it was a kidney stone.

Any disabilities office that has denied you is wrong. That's complete bullsh*t and it pisses me off.

This is taken directly from the ADA:
<i>(2) Disability. - The term ``disability'' means, with respect to an
individual-
(A) a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one
or more of the major life activities of such individual;</i>
( <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/ada.html">http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/ada.html</a> )
Breathing is considered a major life activity and CF most certainly limits breathing.

<i>In terms of higher education for students, the ADA applies to every public college and university and nearly every private college or university in America, with the exception of those institutions affiliated with religious entities or organizations.</i>
( <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://education.stateuniversity.com/pages/1865/College-Students-with-Disabilities.html">http://education.stateuniversi...with-Disabilities.html</a> )

Go to the office with information from this site:
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://adawatch.org/
">http://adawatch.org/
</a>and consider threatening legal action. I am willing to bet they'll change their tune.

This page may be useful as well:

Whether or not you have trouble right now, you need to go to the disability office and fix this. NOW. <b>Before</b> you have a problem. If you wait until something happens (let's say you suddenly need IVs -- even if you've always been healthy, or perhaps a surgery, maybe you need to go inpatient, even for your first time), THEN you'll run into trouble and rightfully so. You need to take care of it now <b>before</b> it becomes an issue so that you're covered should a problem arise.

Hi Caryn,

Another benefit of my Disability Resource Center when I was in college was priority registration. That is huge, when you're a freshman or sophomore because you get to register first, with all the athletes and seniors so you can pick the best available class times to fit your treatment schedule. Hopefully your college has a similar policy.

Through my disability resource center, I also got hooked up to the California Department of Rehabilitation (I went to a UC school) and through the Dept of Rehab my CF allowed me free tuition, books and parking permits on campus. I'm not sure every state has a similar program but thought I would mention it.
