Unmedicated IUI vs. Medicated IUI

Okay, I am still trying naturally until then, but I finally put a cap on my husband. He is so passive about the whole baby thing, and I have had ENOUGH. I finally put a time frame which makes me feel so much better. He doesn't really mind either way. I guess it's a woman "thing". I don't know. He wants a baby but is fine just letting time pass. That doesn't work well for me.

It will be 2 years...I have had ENOUGH.

RECAP: According to our fertility workup in July-August, the problem isn't my husband. With me, they are guessing either scar tissue from 3 prior surgeries and/or poor cervical fluid, which I KNOW has something to do with it. When you take 1,200 mg of Mucinex BID, and it does nothing... The whole scar tissue issue is QUESTIONABLE at best. My tubes came up open with no problems whatsoever. They won't do a laproscopy on me because of the prior surgeries down there so they can't say either way if scar tissue is the issue.

As far as my cycles, they are every 30 days, and I do ovulate. Of course, the clinic wants to jump straight into IVF which I won't do. They can't tell me what the exact problem is so why should I be played the fool??? They only have a 20% success rate with IVF. I will NOT be played!!! Besides, I don't have $8,000.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out if an unmedicated IUI would work for me. I am so WORRIED about the chances of multiple births with medicated IUI. My CF doctor isn't worried at all, but I am worried about the post-delivery part. Jake works 12 hour days most of the time. My Mom could stay with us for awhile, but I would feel bad to use her for that extended amount of time. My FEV1 is 70%, by the way.

Plus, what if we were advised to abort one or more???

Please share with me your thoughts. This WILL be happening in April since my period will be due around the 28th of March.

For now, I am using OPTs, PreSeed, Vitex, Mucinex, and charting. Here are my past two charts so far for you to consider. I WOULD SAY THAT I AM CONSISTENT.

Hi Jenny,

I opted for unmedicated IUI. I also was too worried about multiples. My fertility doc wanted me to start on Clomid right away, but I refused. I was way too worried of carrying multiples and how that would affect our family. We really don't have any family support near us because everyone lives far away from us. So having more than 2 kids would be difficult for us. I decided that if a few cycles of IUI did not work, that I would go through HSG, and as a last resort use Clomid if I had to. I think trying unmedicated IUI first is a great idea to see if that works before you try anything else. It worked for me on try #2. I know it can vary though - they say it's a 75% chance of working after 6 tries of IUI (meaning about a 12% chance per try). Plus you're young, and it may take quicker because of that.

Good luck!

I did medicated IUIs because I really wanted to hurry things up. There is an increased risk of multiples, but it is still a small risk. One thing that we did try was clomid with timed intercourse. I took the week's worth of clmid, had a follicle check and then did the hsg trigger shot, but then we just BDed instead of had an IUI (didn't work for us) - just another idea. I suspect my CM was our problem, and if you think the same you may not want to spend the money on that - BUT, I had one pregnancy go completely naturally, as did lots of others on this site (as in no IUI, nada), so who knows. Anyway. I did two mediucated IUIs and got pregnant with each one, so things may go very quickly for you - you might want a plan - as in this is what we will spend, this is how many times we will try this, etc. so that you don't get in the middle of things and feel overwhelmed, kwim? baby dust and (((HUGS)))

oh, and while if you did conceive multiples, even if your docs suggested selective reduction, you don't have to do it! Remember, there are quite a few CF moms of multiples here - so it can be done successfully (not that you'd want that, just to put some perspective to it).
