Unmedicated IUI vs. Medicated IUI

Thanks, Anne!

Lauren - I know that our #'s are very close, and now we even culture the same things. What I meant about the "baby department" is that I would LOVE his parents to see a 3D ultrasound. His Mom only had 1 basic throughout her entire pregnancy each time. Also, they don't know that things like baby wipes and regular, throw-away diapers exist. I would love to take her to Babies-R-Us and Toys-R-Us. She wouldn't be able to believe her eyes. Heck, Jake got lost once in Toys-R-Us! We were shopping there for our friends kid's birthday. I turn around to talk to him, and he's missing. I walked back a few isles only to find him pushing each and every button on the whole rack of toys to hear what they would say or do. It's sad...Also, this would be the first grandchild on both sides.

My doctor was "okay" with twins but not trips. I on the other hand was more nervous. We can surely afford a couple cycles of IUI. I know that way back I was against even doing that, as some of you remember. I wanted "nature to take its course". Well, I'm done with that!!!

I might even have tried IVF after IUI if it weren't so expensive. I surely wouldn't have had to worry so much about multiples. It's the cost. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0">

Thanks, Lauren, for your input. With our numbers so close, it is interesting to hear that your doc advised against multiples. I may not be so off afterall!

Ok, one thing jumped out at me, an IVF clinic with a 20% success rate? Wow. I didn't know they had those. In 2003 when I was shopping around, my local clinic had a 50% success rate for IVF (women under 35). They still do today! I think first and foremost is to change clinics.

Ok, on to IUI. I did medicated IUI to make sure I was ovulating. My cycles were not regular like yours and I was ovulating late. I did 3 medicated IUIs with up to 150mg of clomid. Each time, no matter the clomid dose, I only had one mature follicle at the time of insemination. The IUI success rate at our clinic at the time was 25%. Mine failed all 3 times, but IVF worked the first time. (I have severe endometriosis)

If you have the time (and patience) why don't you go for an unmedicated cycle and see how it works. You will be monitored to make sure you have a mature follicle before they induce ovulation with the HCG shot. I always got the shot 24 hours before the insemination (if memory serves me) If you have a mature follie, that's the best they can hope for, whether you're on clomid or not.

Good luck to you. My advice, get a new clinic. Those success rates for IVF are way too low. And you need to feel comfortable with those doctors. Don't ever settle for less than you deserve.

Tara,

That's the problem. Most of the clinics around here suck! I know their IVF rate is VERY LOW. It should be no less than 40%. They wanted to pull out IVF first because they wanted to use me as a guinea pig. They referred to it as, "Pulling out the big guns". Jake said, "No". They also lied to me about understanding CF and female infertility. They didn't have a clue about cervical mucus abnormalities either with relation to CF.

I only went to them because a "friend" of my Mom's recommended them. If you go on their website, they don't even give their success rates for anything. They are also located in Philly. Their office name is Reproductive Science Institute. Google it up, and you'll see what I mean about the lack of presenting success rates. They are in Philly and Reading (Wyomissing to be exact), PA. I went to the Wyomissing location.

Like I said, I wouldn't let them do IVF on me period!!! End of discussion. I would go elsewhere for that if we ever agreed to go that route. They wouldn't touch me with a 10 ft pole. As far as IUI, their success rates are the same as anywhere else. I thought I would try only IUI there because they are 10 minutes away from both our home and his job. They are convienent with the same average success rates.

The risk of multiples can be reduced with careful monitoring when doing medicated IUI. I did 6 unmedicated IUI's before trying medicated. My Dr, used injectible medications rather than clomid since she could more carefully regulate the dose. The clinic I went to really wants each woman to have one healthy baby, we agreed ahead of time that if more than 2 folicles looked like they were going to be big enough to ovulate we would cancel the cycle. That way unless they were identical ( very low chance) the most there would be is 2 babies. I liked that option because I would not have been willing to do any type of reduction after conception.
