Hi Ann,

I can tell you that when I was first became symptomatic at age 21, they said I had nodules in my lungs. They show up as white spots on an X-ray. Subsequent X-Rays would show mine disappearing and others showing up. No one ever seemed worried about them.

I do know that my present doctor has seen spots on my X-ray and she notes them as mucus plugs, which I think other people call nodules. When I looked up nodules in the research, it said they are small masses of tissue found in many lung diseases and they were very common. They could also be cysts. Another research paper was titled, "Mucoid impactation presenting as multiple pulmonary nodules." Doesn't sound bad to me.

So I speculate what they saw is what most of have at one time or another.

Ditto what Nightwriter said. I had a lesion in my RUL 1.5 cm come and go. Later it was speculated that it was a mucoid impaction. For me there was a repeat scan six months later.

I too have had nodules on my CT scans. They move around, come and go (never completely gone) but the doctor's are not overly concerned with them as apparently it's the nature of the disease. Sometimes when I'm doing well there are only a few with less white in the general area. Other times when I'm experiencing a flare up there can be dozens showing in my CT scans with a lot more white showing in the scans. One thing the doc did tell me is that CF patients tend to have more issues in the upper portions of the lung and I exhibit that tendency too. One theory is that it's more difficult to do airway clearance up there (less motion) but it sure is counter intuitive because you'd think the crud would move down as gravity dictates. ~Juliet

My upper lobe that I was having such issues with had nodules. With time, meds & effort they did clear. I dont know if that is normal or if I lucked out, but my doctor did say that nodules/cysts are one in the same & quite common.
