using oxygen

The reason they don't put you on O2 if your sats do not go down below 85 is because insurance is not required to pay for it if it doesn't.

In the past I have had O2 concentrator that I used at night but I was able to come off of it,

Right now I am on O2 24/7 because my sats went into the low 80's just sitting still. I have tanks and concentrators.

Orginally to get the home concentrator a few years ago, I did the same thing, I had a pulse ox on my finger over night. I dipped down into the low 80s and remained there for quite a while. I then came off of it and now back on it.

I think it is a great idea to have at home in case you feel like you need it but you should always go by pulse ox because sometimes you feel like you need it and your sats don't say so. Too much o2 is not good either as it can cause you to retain to much CO2

I actually had no idea about that. It's good to know for the future. Thank you for the info!

I had an average of 89 when i started o2 at night, i havent had a new test done though to see how I am now.

My resting sats have dropped a lot in the past 2 months, so i have it around, but i do have my pulse oxymeter to check when i feel short of breath.

Windex,

I got my pulse ox meter from my pulmonologist, but he has his own respiratory/pulmonary practice... it was about $100, one of the cheaper ones.

The brand I have is Devon medical, its a finger blue one w/ a cover. Its great to have.

Actually I think it is 88 that your sats have to drop to and stay that way for more then a minute or two, not 85.

Insurance is insane, before I could leave the hospital this past time, I had well they attempted to do a six minute walk on me, my sats dropped as soon as they took the o2 off and within a minute even before I started walking my sats were in the 80s. BUT before my friend could pick up the oxygen to bring me home, the hospital had to fax to the o2 ppl my test results.

Right now I have the big green tanks to go out with, but I have to admit, the green tanks are way better then the concentrator. I just got a new concentrator and it still doesn't work anywhere as near as good as the green tanks.

I am on it prn, but I use it pretty much 24/7. When I first got on it I only used it at night, and if I was doing stuff, such as going grocery shopping, or anything where I was walking 100feet or more. But with my pfts being 31% I stay hooked up most all day/night

I'm going to talk to my doctor about it tomorrow. I made an appointment to see him. I need a new PFT anyway. I've been having trouble at 2 times during the day but especially in the mornings. It takes me twice as long to get ready for work because I'm constantly having to sit down to take a break.

I got my o2 when I needed it at night. Think when I was 10.
And other than during the night I did it on an as needed basis at first. Later during exercise too and later than that I did it 24/7 most days. And sometimes I was just angry and didn't do take it for a few hours :)

Not like Piper's mom says when I got under 94 though. Was under that all the time
My doc has always told me I needed it when my sats went under 90. But have to say I didn't do that all the time. Had a 6 minute walk in clinic 9 months pre tx and dipped to 60something when we checked after 3 minutes of walking. Really didn't take my o2 everywhere I went... While clearly I should have.

Needing it when it goes under 94, I would need it even now post tx. Some nights with shallow breathing. My sats sometimes drop to 92.

Piper's mom, is o2 below 94 what the doc suggested doing? Won't that make Piper more dependable?
