Vest - pros and cons

When we were at clinic a few days ago I told the Social Worker that we are having a heck of a time doing chest percussions on Alysa (she is almost 3 and way too busy to sit there while I do it even though she does her neb like a champ!).

So I asked about the vest and she said the only way for people in Canada to get it is through fundraising.. okay not a big deal but then she said the reason we cant get it through disability and stuff is due to it not being researched enough and blah blah blah. She actually told me that one group of researchers found a group of adults who have the vest actually complain of chest pain and have to take meds to help with that and they are thinking it is linked to using the vest for extended period of time (in term of years).

So I am on the fence about whether or not I should attempt to fundraise the $20,000 it will cost to purchase one (or two down the road).

Pros and cons of the vest... ? I wil post this is in the adult section as well.

Thanks!

It will be interesting what the adults have to say about this topic. As far as I'm concerned, I think it's the main reason Parker has done so well. He has no trouble with it.

Love the VEST. My daughter started using the VEST at 2 1/2 years old. Prior to that we did manual CPT on her. I found manual to be hard because my arm would get tired; I felt I was not as effective as the VEST. Also, Manual CPT you want your child lying down. Which would mean We would wait til my daughter was tired(and I was too!) til we could lull her to sleep with CPT. With the VEST, Maggie can sit up, watch TV, listen to a story, play on the computer while doing the VEST. So, it's a definate plus for lifestyle for the CF child and parent. I still occasionally do manual CPT on Maggie if she is sick; especially in the middle of the night, rather than disturb her sleep and lug the VEST in her room I could do manual while she drifts off to sleep and I can focus in one area of her lung field with manual. I think the VEST is totally worth the effort of fundraising and investment. I would absolutely recommend getting one.
