Vest question

Granted the average thief won't know what it is or the value of it, but still! And to let it sit in freezing temps and damp conditions, I just was so shocked by it. Just glad I saw him pull up with it or I would have been a little mad.

We're watching the video tonight. I keep talking it up to Cale so hopefully he won't fight it. I think Santa is bringing him his very own TV for his room, so that he can do the vest and watch tv or play too.

I haven't tried it with the vest hooked up yet. I have been trying to get her used to it with just the vest alone, but I plan on trying it next week. (Reilly is at her Dad's this weekend) We have watched the video, and she enjoyed the kids section, so we will see.
I turned it one without Reilly wearing the vest, and was surprised at how quiet it is. I was expecting it to be about the same volume as the nebulizer.

If you go to the web site Hill- Rom (just click, I linked it for you) and click on contact us, it will give you an email option. It doesn't give you the email address, but you type your message and submit. Hope that helps!

Oh we have been calling it Ian's Robot or Darth Vader vest, which he thinks is kind of cool. It seemed farily easy for him to adjust to it.

We were trained on the vest Friday and Cale has been doing 10 minute treatments. He absolutely loves it. He gets to push the 'gas pedal' on. He is use to a life jacket in the boat, so I think that made him more comfortable. We are going to work our time up so that the treatments get longer. We are so thrilled with it! His sister is jealous. We let her have a try so she knew what he was feeling, and she loved it. I hope it lasts!

We were trainign on the vest Monday (via telephone - no home visit), and tried it for the first time that evening. Reilly HATES it. She cried the entire time, so I only did a 5 minute treatment. She is supposed to do 2 20 minute treatments /day. Last night, she did 10 minutes, but again cried the entire time. Any tips or pointers on getting her to tolerate it a little better?

We moved the pressure? setting down to 2 for Cale. It was on 4 at first and it scared him. Do you know what it is set at? He liked it at 2 because he thought it was a little slower. Hopefully it is that simple.

I sat in front of him and he stood the first couple of times. We held hands and sang. I let his older sister try it and he saw her have fun with it too, so I think that helped. Last night he came to me and asked for a treatment. We are at 11 minutes and he wanted to do more so we did another 5. Maybe she could sit on your lap? Cale is now away from hand holding and playing with his trucks and barns while he does it.

I wouldn't push to do the whole 20 minutes yet. Let her do what she is comfortable with at first and hopefully with a little patience she can adjust. Good Luck and let us know how she is doing with it!

Cindy,

Try turning all the settings on the lowest setting to try to get her used to it. Try putting on her favorite show. This sounds kinda crazy but when Maggie got her vest , I tried it on in front of her and turned it on. It is really a strange sensation. I realize the chest vest is so small so most adults couldn't fit their body in it but somehow I did. It had quite an impression on both my kids that i tried the vest as well. My son who is 7 and extremely helpful was very excited when the vest came. he was so excited to touch all the buttons and see what the machine did. I guess we made it seem like Maggie was lucky that she got to use the vest(reverse psychology, I guess) my son didn't want to try it on but I always said he could if he wanted.

Good luck

Gotta go (the boss is calling for me, my daughter Maggie)

Rebecca(mom to Maggie3with CF and Sammy 7 no CF)

I hade the pressure on 4, so I will try it tonight at 2. We tried watching Elmo (her favorite), but that didn't really help. She sits in my lap, and we have tried reading books, too. Thanks for your input! Shelly - I am glad Cale is doing so well!
