Vesting All Night

Harriet - I thought exactly the same thing! Our electric bill is high enough as it is with vest, nebs, feeding pump all night and extra dishwasher cycles...

I'm curious , too, how to figure out how much to deduct. We never have (it hurts my brain to think about how to caclulate it all!), so I hope someone has an answer!!!

Hi! I'm the Mom Jessica was talking about, LOL. There was a study done on overnight vesting last year that showed improvement in some patients. Piper is nowhere near transplant *knock wood*, but does have a tough time with MRSA and exacerbations. I look at it as one more weapon to add to the arsenal. As for the electric bill question, we haven't done it for a full month yet (we had a week vacation and 5 week admission here recently), but next month, again, knock on wood, we should be home for the month and able to tell. My understanding is that it actually doesn't use as much electricity as one might think..ie, no more than a tv set, but time will tell.

I actually brought this up too my doctor. Her thoughts were that this is one time that more wasn't better. She said that vesting only really does any good if you are actively coughing things out. When you are sleeping you aren't coughing things out. She also said that it might also keep your body from getting a deeper sleep than needed causing your immune system to weaken and then you get more bugs. She just said that treatments are 4x's as effective if the patient is putting some work into them as well *i.e. deep breaths, huff coughs etc.

Yea Amanda talked about it a bit on the "which vest" thread. I initially thought of electricity too, but when you think about it... cant be much more than an oxygen concentrator running overnight...

I think its worth a shot. Even if Piper (or the patient) isnt actively coughing, which the way I understand it, not many babies and toddles and young children do anyways... most who have grown up with the vest I think fall asleep easily with the Vest.. I picture it helping b/c in a way, it is not letting the mucus settle down, its always moving and jigglin and so in the morning, she might be able to cough it up easier... Thats my thought around it...

I am interested in seeing what happens with Piper <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I think if you call the vest company they provide you with the exact electrical consumption/specifications (whatever it's called) of the compressor. I do think it was more than something like a tv- it's been brought up here before- but not overly significant if someone only used it an hour or two a day. However, if someone were using it 10hrs a day, I think that might get pretty significant. I'm curious!

I agree that kids often do conk out while vesting, but worry you wouldn't get the same 'quality' of sleep while it runs all night, since your movement is so restricted (not to mention noise level and the constant movement.) But who knows? If constant coughing, etc is keeping someone up and the vest provides relief, then there might well be better sleep quality.

No, we didn't take a med. deduction. It wasn't worth it for us vs. the standard one, since you have to exceed 7.5% of your income on medical expenses before you can deduct anything and we didn't (thank God) spend that much on medical stuff alone to make it worth it vs. the standard.
