The best form of vit. D to take orally is D3 or cholecalciferol. D2 is no good, and can be toxic.

Also, from what I know, in order to get Vit. D from the sun, you have to be in the mid-day sun, to get enough UVB rays to make Vit. D (UVA rays do not make Vit. D, & are most damaging to skin cells, & UVAs pass through all glass, unlike UVB which is blocked by glass). We have to be outside in the sun!! At this time, our bodies can make up to 20,000 IU's daily!

Another very important factor is soap. Washing the oils off your skin with soap makes it very hard for your body to synthesize & absorb the Vit. D. The process of your skin cells making vitamin D (from Cholesterol) takes up to 48 hours for your body to complete. It is actually recommended to not use soap every day, otherwise you are not getting much Vit. D at all!

Lastly, and very importantly, If you live in the northern half of the united states, there are not enough UVB rays needed, during the late fall, winter or early spring months to make vitamin D. So supplementation is absolutely necessary at this time.
