I've had similar stories that I could share,,,but I won't because they are even scarier. The best advice that I give everyone, regardless of their diagnosis, is to be alert when you are in the hospital or ER. Pay attention to what they give you, how much they give you and when.

Roger - props to you for catching the nurse's mistake!! There DEFINITELY would have been a confrontation/situation had that happened to me. And then that she denied that it was a big deal!? ugh.

Jenny - your post literally made me laugh out loud; I love the "no, I just picked it up last week" lol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

I have never been hospitalized, so I don't have any terrible experiences with those nurses, but I have had some with my clinic nurse; here are some lovely quotes from her:

"I wish I had CF so I wouldn't have to worry about my weight" Um, I'm pretty sure no one wishes they have CF, and actually you would have to worry about your weight, just the opposite of what you do now.

"I understand you've been out of medicine for a week, but I don't have time to call it in today...I'll try to do it tomorrow." UGGH...how useless can you be?? It takes her FOREVER to call in my rx's.

I just filled out an online survey and a comment card venting all of my concerns to my clinic. I definitely agree that you have to be your own advocate for your health; no one cares more about it than you.

Good for you to stand up! But and this is just my opinion, bring it up to the head nurse that is in charge of ALL the nurses cause that hopsital and nursing staff MUST know that this happened so it will not happen again. This once happen to me when I was little with a pill and my parents brought it up and there was a whole big thing about it. Recently I was given IV drugs with Dextrose which I request NOT to give me because I am diabetic and it was this whole thing but I did bring it up to the head nurse and the nurse in question was asked what happened and the case was brought to the head of the dept.'s attention. So, just an idea. You do need an advocate when you are in the hospital cause it is so hard as the patient to worry about if the right drug is being hung or the right pill is being dispensed. Good luck and SOOOOO glad you caught it!!!!

Make sure the nurse fills out a incident report for giving the wrong drug. You dont just get off scott free for doing that kind of stuff. What if she had been allergic to Levaquin.

If the first rule of medicine is checking the label 3x the 2nd rule is checking the patients wrist band before you give any care or medications or do any procedures.

Good for you for watching out.
