Wanting to have a baby

I thought it was the same chances as 2 carriers, since if you have CF you are still a carrier. The stats I know are 25% carrier, 25% having CF, and 50% of being neither. Or at least thats what I was told. I believe they check for 87 mutations now because thats how many they have found (not exactly sure about this fact, again its just what I was told).

Nope. If you have CF you carry 2 CF mutations. The only thing you have to give is a CF mutation. Therefore, your child will be a carrier for sure. If your spouse is not a carrier, then you have a 100% chance of having a carrier. If your spouse is a carrier, then you have a 50% chance of having a child with CF and a 50% chance of having a carrier.

Also, there are WAY more than 87 mutations. LIke upwards of 2000 that are none. They test for something like 1600 with ambry and then check for deletions.

Julie has an explanation of these percentages on her site at: http://cysticfibrosismaleinfer...in_carrierTesting.html

It doesn't go into the various tests available and how many mutations, but it should help clarify why it's 1-2 risk of CF rather than 1-4.

Good luck!

Hi,

I know this topic is from a few months ago but I am new to this forum and just wanted to respond.

We had a long process of soul searching about how we wanted to become parents. We even went to counseling to help us sort things through. Ultimately, we decided on adoption rather than pursuing pregnancy.

We are now the parents of 2 wonderful sons -- both adopted at birth within the United States. We do not regret our choice at all!!

Parenting with CF is hard enough. For me, not having been pregnant and taxing my body that way was the right choice. It such a personal decision that no one else can tell you what is right for you.

BUT, I remember well how difficult it was to arrive at this decision! So many days and nights of talking and thinking and hoping and, honestly, crying too.

Just wanted to offer some support since I've been there. If you ever want info on adopting, please feel free to ask. Good luck with whatever you decide! -Ellie

no mayahs dad is not in the picture, he could not handle the cf and transplants. that is another cause for sadness for us because she will have no parents. she will however have us, her family who loves her more than life itself. alls i was trying to say is that mayah has NOT had it easy. her life has been full of turmoil and separation from her mom because kari is SO ill and it is really HARD on her.
we have a fundraiser website set up w/pictures etc

it is lifefundforkarirankin.com

please go there and see pics of kari and mayah! and any help at all would be so very appreciated. things are so difficult right now.

take care

Hi Khristina

I'm a 54 year old female w/cf. I have 4 sons, ages 31,28,16
&13. I also have a grandson who just turned one. I
didn't know that i had c/f until i was diagnosed at the age of 44.
So in answer to your question, yes you can definitely become
pregnant.
