Weaning off the bottle...

I have 2 older kids w/o cf and with them I followed the "normal" guidelines and weaned around a year old. My youngest w/cf was on the bottle until he was 2 1/2. When I would bring up weaning him at his checkups (with CF docs not his pediatrician) they actually encouraged me to keep him on it. I felt like people must think I'm a bad mom lol (public judgment) but you know what...it was by far the easiest way to keep calories in him. Any time it came up they would then bring up the g tube, which he does have now and weight is still a big struggle for us.

My long answer in short is...don't worry about the typical guidelines, obviously take extra good care of her teeth and encourage the cup also but I think the bottle is still important for her.

My son never had any issues from having his bottle longer than the norm.

I do love how the pediatricians always know what's best for our kids despite not living in our homes <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I kept my son on a bottle of formula until he was 18 months, then we went to milk and just a morning and bedtime bottle and then finally when he was just over two no bottles. He was upset for the first week but recovered. Now, he still likes using a sippy cup, and that is fine with me especially on my carpet.

I find the challenge is to listen to my own instincts and not just the clinic, or pediatricians. I'm a confident mum but one doctor's visit can be enough to make me doubt myself.

Update:

Thanks all!!

We ended up bringing back the lunch time bottle, which sometimes she drinks and sometimes she prefers the sippy (shocking, right?) So we're working with it, but she's been doing great with table food and she loves that mega-pudding recipe I found on this site, so that's been alleviating my calorie worries. The only juice she likes is V8 fusion and V8, if that even counts as juice, but she does the best with that.

Thanks for all the tips guys! You definitely helped me remember that some of those "rules" don't apply to us and that I should go with my gut. We're going to try and cut back again in six months and see how it goes.
