Weight/Constipation

Pancreatic sufficiency can change. It would be my guess Holly needs another stool test. The basic rules of poop are, if it floats, it has undigested fat in it. Therefore the fats she's eating are passing right through her, and not helping her put on weight.

Does Holly go to a CF center? If you have one locally (or within a few hours) I would recommend seeing the team of doctors/nurses/specialists at a CF center. I wish I could help more, but it sounds like she needs more tests done.

Hi Bobbi,
You will be amazed what enzymes can do for your daughter. We have a picture of Andrew the day he started enzymes, and another approximately six months later and the difference was amazing. This disease is one that evolves as patients age. Just because she was ps before does not mean she can go her entire life being that way. The good news is you have options to help her!

My son has always been pancreatic insufficient, but with very little lung involvement. Now, his lungs are starting to join in the fun. I love this site because it keeps me aware of what could be in the future. It's always a blow when another problem develops, or another med is needed, but knowing that there is protocol for situations like yours helps CF families feel less lonely.

Please keep us posted!

Sorry for the second post, Bobbi, but I just wanted to also mention that since Andrew was diagnosed we have switched his enzymes, as well as the doses, 5 times. Keeping that digestive system functioning properly is something I watch almost daily...(how many bowel movements?...did they sink or float?...any stomach cramping?)

So, don't feel defeated if you find a good enzyme that works well for Holly now, but next year she starts to have these problems all over again. As she grows her needs will increase and a simple change like more enzymes or a different brand can make a big difference. It's all a part of the wonderful game we play!
