weight gain issues

I assume you've tried upping the enzymes, but just in case you haven't...
I have been hovering around 68 kilos since i was about 20 (I'm 30 now), and have never been able to gain weight. In December I talked to one of the nutrition people at the hospital again, in the past they've suggested switching to fattier foods etc, and I've done that without any real effect.
She also suggested upping the enzymes a bit. I took her advice and switched from 4 capsules of creon to 6-8. I had a checkup a couple of days ago, and from December to April I've gone from 68 to 71 kilos (about 6 pounds?).
And that was without changing my diet. I still don't eat enough, and don't like fat <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I thought my old dosage was fine, everything felt fine, and I had the misconception that upping the dosage would get me constipated. It did not, and I've gained weight for the first time in ten years.

He is on the maximum number of enzymes per day--has always had to be maxed out to gain weight. The clinic has seen my husband and my other two kids on numerous occasions so they can see the growth pattern of my kids. We have tried nutritional drink but he does not like them. We used to make him chocolate half and half/heavy cream but he got so sick of it and it was a battle to get him to drink it so we removed that from his diet for a while.

My daughter does not have a CF dx at least not yet. She is dx with Failure to Thrive. Her gastroenterologist has been very concerned about her height and weight. She is 11 years old 52 inches and 56 lbs and I think the 2nd and 3rd percentile. Her gastroenterologist happens to be the CF team where she is now being seen by pulmonology, but she has seen this gastroenterologist for the past 7 years. We have tried Reglan, but stopped shen DD got a tic. We tried Arythromycin, but she instatnly threw it up. I guess now I am understanding why GI wanted to put my daughter in the day hospital and use a feeding tube to help her gain weight. She asked if my daughter was dx with CF at every visit. Now I think maybe she was trying to drop a hint about seeking a second pulmonology opinion. Also our pediatrician told me not worry about height and weight, so I didn't worry.

Currently my daughter is admitted to the hospital for a respiratory infection and a round of IV antibiotics. Should I ask for a GI consult or nutrition while we are here or schedule when we get home?

Being that you're there, you may as well ask for a GI consult. They could probably do a fecal fat test...

My clinic is mentioning a gtube now and Elliott is only 3 months old and getting most of his nutrition from TPN IV. He loves to eat but they only allow 1 ounce. you would have to read my blog to get the big picture of wahts going on with Elliott. Me clinic is all about more calories that all they talk about and my son weights 10 10. at 3 months.....

I have a 13 year old and a 7 year old, both boys, both with CF and g-buttons. We have struggled with weight gain from the start with both of them. We pushed the extra calories because they were both picky eaters also. We tried extra butter, etc and it seemed to maybe help a little but then they would eventually drop back down on the scale and the charts. I am sure your child is like mine are and they run, run, run, the funny thing is that you want them to run to keep their lungs strong but when they run they lose the calories and weight that you try so hard to put on them. My oldest got his g-button when he was 5 and we waited (probably longer than we should have) to actually get the surgery done. He ended up getting sick and didn't have the "reserve" to fight the infection. He has had good weight gain consistantly for the past 6 years, sometimes it is a big gain like 8 lbs and others it is just 2-3 lbs. I do wish that we would have gotten the g-button sooner because you try so hard to get them to gain and really the wall is stacked against you.

My 7 year old just got his g-button this past July. We tried so hard with him also to get him to gain the weight and we just couldn't do it. We knew that it was inevidable so we went ahead and scheduled the surgery. We did go to visits for 2 years and kept getting "badgered" by the dietician and docs. My boys are still very active, of course life changed a little after the surgeries but I think it really has been for the better. Our 13 year old plays competitive soccer and basketball and will probably be doing track in the Spring. Our 7 year old play soccer and wants to play football (which is still under discussion and will be until next Fall). I wouldn't get yourself all stressed out about it I would just think about your options. I can tell you that they did put our 13 year old on a appetite stimulant (antihistimine) that he takes a little pill twice a day. They just recently did this which has helped his appetite and he doesn't have any of the tiredness side effects others have mentioned. Let me know if you have any questions that maybe I can help you with. Good luck
