DS was on oral Prednisone for a few days, then IV steroids, then back on Prednisone. He gained 3 pounds during this time, which is awesome. I was told by the dr. that it is completely normal for someone to gain that much weight that quickly but it's only due to the steroids. He's been off the steroids for about a week and has lost 2 of the 3 pounds. I'm hoping that last pound will stay. Has anyone gained any permanent weight from Prednisone or did it all go away after a little while?

Well steriods make you retain water I believe. I have never been on Prednisone, but I actually take a hormonal steriod sometimes called Megace for appetite. It adds on a layer of fat, but I try to use the energy I get to work out and turn the fat into a more long lasting muscle. When I dont turn it to muscle, the weight does not "stick" as long I have noticed.
Plus, one doctor told me once, steriods like prednisone, make muscle fatty or something like that, so he prefers to not use it too much b/c it decreases your breathing muscle strenth etc.. (how true is that? I dont know... I havent really expanded that question b/c I havent ever been on pred).

Prednisone can increase appetite dramatically, so if weight gain also comes from hugely increased calorie intake that might stick around. But that sudden increase~ which could never be achieved through normal eating, is not as likely to last.
Emily is on prednisone fairly regularly for illness, up to 3wks at a time. It does help her appetite a bit but we have never seen more than a tiny increase in weight- so in her case, it only helps as far as what she puts on due to actual calorie intake.

I always gain weight when I'm on pred, one time I gained about 9 lbs. I find that while I'm on ivs and after while my pfts are good I keep the weight on but as soon as Pfts start dropping I start losing. My weight fluctuates between 93-100 now depending on how I'm doing. The pred definitely increases appetite and I end up eating constantly.

Yep! My daughter has been on Prednisone since the middle of October and she has gained about 10 pounds! It is very noticable. She actually looks great <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> But of course, at almost 13 years old, she is not liking it too much! She doesn't care too much for the rounded face that she is getting, not to mention the belly fat. But, I am sure it won't last...

my five year old son Marcos with CF has been on Prednisone and has gain 13 pounds since July. He has very round face and a belly he looks so cute but he is also getting very hairy wish is one of the side affects that you can get for taking this med. How long do you have to take Prednisone for? I so glad to see him eating all his meals and snacks.
