there is a cf shake that has like 1080 calories or so and isnt very big they serve it at the childrens hospital in Little Rock. i dont remember exact input but you use heavy whipping cream, peanut butter vanilla ice cream couple tablespoons of chocolate syrup and maybe whole milk. anyway it is only a little over 8 ounces . i last the original recip. so i just sorta put it together and figured out the calories i was adding with each ingrediant. also my daughter is 16 and we use heavy whipping cream every chance we get like in mashed potatoes and if i fry chicken i dip it in that first. She also just drinks two caration plus (375 cal. each) for breakfast and then 2 right before she goes to bed. we call it "power slamming" them bc she doesnt really like them so she just downs them really quick. she also keeps them at room temp which seems gross to me but mite actually help it go down better.. not sure.

I ate out A LOT to gain weight. Its expensive but its the only thing that worked for me. I could eat foods I loved and get a big quantity. Then always get a dessert. I had to stretch my stomach slowly.

Also ask for butter on the side no matter what you order. And slather it on everything. Breads, rice, sanwiches, pastas, steaks, burgers, sides, you get the idea.

I couldn't gain weight for years and years until I started exercising again. I have gained about 5 lbs. in the last few months. Don't know if that will help you gain weight but I am sure that exercise would at least make you feel better.

I have gained back 10 lbs but it took me about 8 months. People were commenting daily about my weight loss--so I know how you feel. I did a few things to help gain it back...I eat as much bread and pasta as I can. someone on this site suggested peanut butter (as much as you can handle). I also found a cereal that I like and I eat bowls of it when I can (Special K red berry). I dont fill up on junk food and massive amounts of sugar but I do try to eat dessert when I have a meal. I tried hi cal energy bars and drinks but they tasted like chemical crap to me. I also weigh myself daily and it makes me feel better to see the weight going back on. I think when my lungs got a little better then my body started putting the weight back on---also, I was stressed out and that didnt help. good luck!</end quote>

Yeah, I've tried. I'm very picky to what foods I like lol. I'm gonna just try and not think about it all so much as I used too.. I think the stress is what is causing me to not gain any of it back. Thank you for giving me those tips!

I would consider exersising but my lungs are so bad right now, I lose my breath just walking to and from the bathroom in my house. I think the stress of all that and not being able to gain weight, is just making it all worse. :/

Hi Katie, you might want to have your blood sugars/ glucose tolerant test done again just to rule out CFRD. I know that CFRD can be responsible for unexplained weight loss or just the lack of ability to gain weight despite how much you're eating.

If that comes back clear, basically everything everyone else has said. haha (helpful right?) One thing I really like is benecalorie from nestle. Unlike scandishakes and all the other supplements (i.e boost, ensure etc) it's really small 1.5 oz of liquid, jammed packed with calories, fat AND protein, but doesn't have a gazillion grams of sugar. It mixes into things like yogurt, juice (which makes the juice taste like yogurt in my opinion) but my favorite way to take it is with some chocolate milk. They're a little on the expensive side, but so worth it! (Plus since you only need about 4 oz of 'extra' liquid vs. the 8 wiht a scandishake, they're easily consumed even when you aren't hungry. and they don't leave you feeling stuffed)

Appetite stimulants : Megace, Marinol, Periactin could help. Marinol would be similar to your 'special brownies' but itsn't illegal, since it's the synthetic form of THC designed for weight gain.

Whole milk is awesome. Nuts are awesome. Did you know in just a 1/4 cup of pecans you've consumed 10 grams of fat?? Do you know how small 1/4 cup is? That's like 4 pecans. I like to crush them up into a fine powder and add them to my oatmeal. Hardly taste them, but extra calories & fat.

Good luck!

Exercising is a good way to build muscle mass and muscle weighs more than fat, and lasts longer too!

I assume you take Creon or other enzyme replacement along with ADEK vitamins. Carnation has renamed Instant Breakfast to Breakfast Essentials. I down at least 3-16oz Breakfast Essentials, I prefer chocolate, with whole milk, and a dose of Creon. I am sensitive to fatty foods so if my weight is ok, I switch to 1%. At your age I was 6' and 113lb, you could see daylight between my ribs and I was on a 6000 Cal/day diet. At the same time my father was dieing from CF. I watched as his 6' 145lb frame, now at 100lb lose the battle to gain weight. At the time niether of us were diagnosed w/CF, so pancreatic insufficiency, which now is obvious, was missed along with enzyme supliments like Pancreacarb (old med) were not given. Eating fats may not work depending on your capacity for them. I can eat Klondike ice cream sandwiches, can afford, for now a grande Mocha and old fashioned donut. It sort of makes gaining, or maintaining weight fun. Chances are you are currently enzyme dependent so dose all food. My CF doc prescribes two strengths of Creon so I can tune my intake accurately. If this is all old news, consider adding bile (health food/vitamin stores) especially after something like steak, ribs, or if vegies are your desire, nut meats, soy burgers etc

Hi Katie, I haven't read this whole thread fully to know wall what has been suggested but for me exercise, mainly weight lifting, made a world of difference and plus it's obviously good for my lungs. The exercise aspect of it I'm not totally sure of with transplant but I wouldn't think it's a bad thing. The weight lifting obviously will help you to put on some nice toned weight and make your appetite increase so you'll naturally eat more and be putting more down so it won't feel as annoying having to force it down. Personally I opted not to get a feeding tube when they talked to me about it 'cause I thought "hell no you're not messing up my abs" lol - I know stubborn me but at the time I was in such bad shape the scare they gave me of exactly how bad I was made me kick myself in high gear and really get my act together. I began just forcing food down on a time schedule not on a "I'm hungry now so I'll eat" schedule. That combined with starting weightlifting I put on some nice weight and to the point some friends and people in the gym started encouraging me to try entering a local natural bodybuilding show which I eventually did and that was all it took. Sure I have setbacks all the time and lose weight from exaserbations and such but usually now it doesn't take a whole lot to get it back - kind of developed muscle memory I guess which is nice. I've even done extreme things like make high calorie weight gainer shakes and keep beside my bed when I go to sleep and set my alarm to wake up in the middle of the night, down it quickly and go right back to sleep - but I'll admit it takes ALLOT of dedication and motivation for me to do stuff like that and constantly cram food down like that to gain above my now normal weight. Typically I do stuff like that either when I'm preparing to do a show and trying to bulk up some or after I've gotten over a chest infection from losing some weight to increase the rate at which I gain it back.

But the main thing for me is definitely the weight lifting, it naturally increases my appetite and obviously helps pack on the pounds. And don't worry and think doing that will just make you bulky looking or more of a masculine physique - you're a young lady who doesn't seem to naturally have a build of being muscular so it will not be easy for you to get that way. Typically for females without that type of build naturally it really takes some busting @ss in the gym and weights to get to that kind of look and definitely not the bodybuilding type physique. The only thing it'll do for you is good as far as looks goes. And remember muscle weighs more than fat so if you can get that on you'll ad to the scale easier/quicker imo.

Try making smoothies with whole milk and lots of fruits and protein powder. You should gain weight if you drink a few a day. I know prior to my stomach surgery the doctors made me drink those damn nutri shakes. I made chocolate milk shakes out of them adding whole milk, regular vanilla ice cream, protein powder and chocolate syrup. I literally drank 2 milk shakes a day and 2 fruit smoothies along with regular food and packed on about 10 lbs in 2 weeks. Good Luck......dont forget to take your enzymes too before drinking the shakes. You need to absord every ounce of nutrition from them <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
