Well bad news for me

Awesome idea skye. Very worth looking into, I had no idea they gauge differently if you are self employed. Anyways, I called my boss and told him whats up. He was very understanding. They have set me up 12 hours per week for every week in April just to make the sting not so bad during the first month, until my old position is filled. After that, due to my particular title being in strong demand (the officers are in a rank based system skill/education/experience wise), they are more than willing to work with me to help me get part time hours.

As soon as my time winds down in April, I'm gonna go full bore with applying for state/federal law enforcement positions. I'll eventually get one of them. And I'm going to enjoy this time off, because I haven't had a vacation in two years.

Hi Faust, though we haven't talked since i've been a member, your post caught my eye. Take this opinion for what you will, but it's merely an idea. I have two jobs. I work as a brick mason for a small masonry company three days a week, (cash under the table) and i also work for Discount Tire Company. Discount Tire is my reportable income, and i work there three days a week as well. my idea comes to me due to the fact that my boss at the masonry company just purchased a sizeable bar/pub/pool hall, and asked me to help him out by working there for a few months. i can't do it, due to my obligation at my other job, but it got me thinking as i was reading your post. Scott (my boss at the masonry company) and i discussed the income situation for the bartenders and waiters at this bar, as he has been a silent observer in the process of purchasing the place, and is priveleged to all of the financial records, due to the fact that he has forked over the $25,000 earnest money to start the negotiation of purchase. The wait staff at the bar makes around $2.50 per hour, yet bring home $100 to $250 per night in tips. Not one of the people on the wait staff reports the full amount of their earnings. The bartenders make more. (in tips) I believe at $2.50 per hour, working a specified amount of days per week, you could fudge the $9** something gross per month, yet kill in tips. (read: cash) I live in Indiana, and we can smoke in bars. I know lots of states are adopting non smoking policy, yet if Florida is behind the times, my point is a pipe dream. but if it is possible, maybe it's something to explore. And appologies for the run-on sentances, I think faster than I type.
I wish you well,
Craig

Thanks Craig. Yeah I have been eyeballing bar tending as a real possibility too. I've known what they take home at the end of the night, and if you have the right personality (I do), not hard on the eyes, and can make people laugh (me <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">) you can make rediculous money on tips. Happy drunk people that you make laugh tend to give you large sums of money!

After April my time at work will probably come to a screeching halt, I will have my sinus surgery and then start formulating a real plan. Bartending for a smoke free/outdoor bar is high on the top of my list.

Ender,
Just curious but what's it like for a CF there in that type of situation? I'm getting close to losing my SSI because of my husband's job. I can't get disability, I don't have the work credits. I really need the Medicaid which isn't that great. I have that plus my husband insurance and that does cover everything. His insurance by itself will not cover most of my medicines. So I'm just curious. I would like to know if the health care is better and such. I think it would be something interesting.
