What do docs consider when admitting for iv antibiotics?

Thank you all for your responses. It is helpful to hear what others have experienced.

She was in the hospital for 5 days, had a picc inserted so we could continue iv meds at home. We have about a week to go. While in the hospital, I asked several times if they would repeat the PFT before leaving and they said no. We were told that it was not necessary until she finishes her course of treatment. One doc even said they would wait to repeat until two weeks after she completes the meds. I find it a bit puzzling that they wouldn't at least check after a week or so into the treatment plan. In fact, I called her doc's office a few days after we were discharged to find out when they wanted to see her for follow up. The nurse had to check with the doctor but told me that they typically just wait until the next regularly scheduled clinic appointment, which for us, is in July! I came a bit unglued and told her that was definitely unacceptable. We need to re-check in the next month at least. The doctor's office called me back later and said they want us to come in next week for a PFT! I don't know if her doc was planning to have us come in anyway or if my neurotic crazy mom attitude with the nurse caused them to get us in next week! Either way, I don't care! I just want to see how she does on this PFT after being on the meds.

At my clinic they wait until you have completed your course of IV medication, which is usually no longer then two weeks after discharge. After the PFT's they will determine if the PICC should stay in longer for more IV abx, if not they remove it and then you have usual 3 month visits.

While I'm admitted to the hospital I have PFT's performed every tuesday/thursday or every monday/wednesday, and then of course the day or two before I'm discharged. Not doing any pft in the hospital seems a bit odd to me too.

My daughter just got out of the hospital Monday. They admitted her because of an increased cough that wouldn't get better with orals plus she had a 15% drop in pft's. And then they did an xray which showed atelectasis (partly collapsed lung in r upper lobe) so that was the BIG tipoff.

They put her on one week of IV's and now orals for two weeks. And, they did pft's before they released her from the hospital to determine if they needed to keep her in longer but she was better. Yayyy! (And now she has hives from the oral antibiotics so we are trying another one...)

Good luck with all of this- sounds like they are doing the right things from what I can tell...
