What do you do for hemoptysis?

Yeah, the nice thing about Vitamin K is that it helps with blood clotting and is a natural antibleeding vitamin. If I'm having trouble with hemo or streaking I pop 2 per day. You can get it for $3.99 at Whole Foods.
Another thing I do is to remove all my triggers--they include caffeine, pulmozyme, stress. Taking advil is said to cause it, too.

The best thing to do is trouble shoot, and experiment with what works for you. It's taken me awhile to find the right combo for me, but I never really worry too much about it--just a normal part of CF

I wouldn't really worry except that it is VERY unusual for me, plus it has come at the end of 2 weeks of worsening cough/mucus/etc. So that does worry me. Guess we will see though! My only concern about taking extra K... I have a port, so I've always been super freaked out about blood clots. Will Vitamin K make my chances of that higher?

And yes, advil thins your blood so it would be worse. My two episodes have seemed completely random! I don't even drink caffeine, ever!

OK here is another question. Has anyone ever run a fever after hemoptysis? I spiked a high (for me) fever last night and still have one today. I realized as I was tossing and turning last night that this same thing happened after my last hemoptysis, but I was on IVs at the time so I figured the fever was from the IVs. Both times it's also been accompanied by a really upset stomach the next day... I don't know if that is because of the fever, or because maybe I swallowed some blood?

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this....

I've had it a few times as well, the first was in the middle of my sleep I woke up with gurgling in my chest and it made me caugh, rolled over and spit in the garbage and it looked unusually dark and liquidy. I took a breath and the gurgling was still there so I thought this is weird and something made me get up and turn on the light only to find I had spat out a mouthful of blood into the garbage. Needless to say it freaked me out and I went to the hospital straight away.

I researched it after and came across where someone said to take l-lysine when you get it to help get it under control especially if it is a bad bleed. What the lysine does is constrict the small capillaries somewhat to restrict the blood flow to the broken vessel/vessels and give a better chance for it to clot and close off quicker. I have done that with the few I've had since and it has helped stop them rather quickly.
In addition to the suggestions above, I found that placing a bag of frozen peas on my chest helps stop the bleed more quickly. I say to my hubby, "Get the Peas!!!!"

I agree, adding ice or frozen veggies does seem to help. Before my transplant I would get bad bleeds from time to time, but taking ADEKS vitamins (Since they have a lot of K, for clotting) regularly, reduced the severity of the bleeding.
