What do you think of this fundraiser?

My husband brews his own beer and it's actually quite good. He has a couple different batches he's making. Jokingly, I said we should have a beer tasting. Like a wine tasting, with home brew...Something to clear your palate like salty pretzels in between.. Charge a overall fee and donate the $ to CFF. I think it would be fun to go to but #1 Don't want people to get drunk and #2 Don't know what the liability would be making your own beer then having the fundraiser.. Like is that legal? Anyone have any ideas???

The local CFF chapter in my area has had several beer and wine tastings as fundraisers. I attended 2 of the wine tastings, and they were fun. I think it is really cool that your husband brews his own beer, and sounds like a good idea to make a fundraiser out of it.

As far as legality etc, I think it depends on where you have it. The events I attended were at restaurant/bars that sponsored the fundraiser. If you held it at your own place then there might be legality issues. Do you have any contacts at your local CFF chapter? The people I've met with are very helpful with providing information on how to hold your own fundraisers, so they might be able to give you more specific info.

One piece of advice I would give if you don't want people getting drunk is to be sure to have a decent amount of food. There wasn't a lot at the wine tastings I attended, which was hard because it was around dinner time, and the alcohol can hit me pretty fast if I eat on an empty stomach. So if you can, see if you can organize people to bring some easy bar foods - chicken wings, pizza, nachos maybe. And be sure to have the servers really just pour out 'tastes', not full glasses - that should help prevent over indulgences.

good luck!

I just wanted to add that for legality, I think you have to have someone serve it with a liquor license. So like Eileen said, have a restaurant sponsor it or something, you can PROVIDE the beer (and maybe they can donate some too?) and then they can actually SERVE it.

There is a restaurant by me that actually has little thingies on the table that say they will sponsor fundraiser events of your choice, you just need to contact the manager. Then on the back of the menu is a schedule of upcoming fundraisers! Very cool restaurant indeed. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Here in Pittsburgh, I seem to remember our CFF doing a wine and cheese. Never heard beer, but that would go over even better in my neck of the woods. Less pretentious.

But yeah, I wonder about the laws.
